It is hard for me to get used to the higher tension (I am coming from TI Jazz Rounds), but I do like the tone so far. Definitely zingy-er, but I think I could even go full on steel strings and not suffer from overboard clank/harshness--its like my Roscoe makes it hard for me to get BAD tone!!
I am not sure if I will keep them on very long, only because of the tension issue and I am eager to try out some other DR models.
coyoteboy, if you want this set, I can give them up for $30 shipped. They have less than an hour playing time on them with washed hands. I cut the B a bit shorter than I wanted (wraps 1 1/2 times around the tuning peg--I usually shoot for at least 2 wraps), but have had no issues because of it. |

It's never caused a problem of slippage. Some players (and builders) believe that due to the large diameter of the B, it's better not to wrap it excessively around the tuner post (it open's up windings which results in premature deadening of string).
Staying on topic, I ordered a couple of sets of the DR black Beauties AGAIN! I really like the sound but always end up taking them off because of the slightly tacky feeling and premature fret wear associated with SS strings. However, I've recommended them to several local players and I've noticed when they bring their basses in for setups (months later) they still have the same set on and the strings still sound great. also haven't noticed any significant wear on the frets, so maybe the coating does help in that area too.
You can purchase 2 set's of the Black Beauties at Elderly Instruments for $34.25 ea. and get free shipping for an $85 order. Good price! |

I'm not sure I could get away with using Hi-beams on mine, and I don't even use tweets!
maybe I could throw on a set of light gauge Hi-beams, and then we could trade?
j/k, I'll toss you a PM.

To my ear, the coated DR's have a bit more mid-range growl and a bit less sizzle than the uncoated DR's.
Of course my ears are worn out from too many years of rock and roll!
Uh? What'd you say? Oh, turn up the bass! OK! |

Personally I really don't care for the feel of Stainless (even DR's) either. Callous eaters
God Bless, Ray

The super zing does seem to disappear rather quickly but I LOVE the top end after theyve broken in a bit. Tension is a touch more than I like but very tolerable.
Both basses with Fat beams are ash FWIW
