How versatile? This much...

A while back there was a discussion about what types of music we play with our Roscoe instruments, and a lot of us commented that we cover significant ground. I know I count on my Roscoe to handle a wide variety of genres, often during the same gig. This last Sunday was a great example...I had a trio wedding gig, where we covered everything from cocktail jazz to Jewish folk tunes to R&B and dance music. Great gig, and the Roscoe was the absolute perfect choice. I was on the date with some stellar musicians, and we had a blast trading roles and sharing ideas.

Anyway, the proof of versatility is in the mp3's, right? Here's some wedding gig tuneage, with the Roscoe going into the small Genz Benz Shuttle 6.0-12T. Everything was flat & centered, except for the bass EQ on the instrument, which sits happily @ ~ 7/10, and the pre-gain on the Shuttle, at about the same. All the samples are short and should download quickly. As always, if you like 'em, credit the bass. If you don't, blame the bassist.

Some Day My Prince Will Come

Hava Nagila - the tail end of a long festive dance with two different tunes.

I Wish - bring on the R&B, baby!

Unforgettable - shame on me for not learning the head...in all my years of playing this tune, this is the first time I've had to solo on it.

Play That Funky Music - I even got the 'guitar' solo on this one, but alas, Mother Nature once again intervened with a screaming baby (on the dance floor, no less), to prevent it from being shared.

Mustang Sally - if there's a wedding and this tune isn't played, is it cause for an annulment?

Realistically, I could've brought two instruments to this gig, but as any working stiff knows, the lighter the load-in, the lighter the load-out. So, while I do have instruments with more "bark & bite" than the Roscoe...and I also have one that is more "upright-ish" for the standards, there's just nothing like the Roscoe for covering everything.

That's "the" tone! Tasteful playing as always...

Was all this just a small WAV recorder and internal mic again?

Thanks, fellas! Dave, yep...M-Audio Microtrack 24/96 with the cheapo T-mic. I record in 24-bit .wav format, which definitely helps capture the low end...even though I end up exporting to 128kb .mp3 for sharing on the web.

Good stuff.

If I could get a Fender Jazz or Stingray slap tone out of my SKB-3005/3006, I wouldn't need Fender or EBMM basses.

Besides that, I use my Roscoes for country, metal, reggae, blues, classic rock, etc. VERY versatile basses.

A Roscoe with Nord DCs or Bart Classics and a Demeter will get you a awesome slap tone.

The Demeter has been replaced in the lineup by the Audere, otherwise, yes, you can get the Classic Bass pickups or the Nordstrand DC's.

Thanks Gard, who do I contact if I want to pursue this ? If my Roscoe could get a more aggressive slap tone I would consider it the "go to" for all types of music..

We don't keep a stock of these, just order them as they are required to fill custom orders for new basses. We can get one for you, but there is nothing "magic" about ours, it's an Audere 3ZB with some minor modifications (things left off - little blinky blue LED that we have no interest in, etc). You can order one directly from Audere and either install it yourself, or have your tech do it locally, and it will save you some time and money:

www.audereaudio.com

Good luck!

ah, dude, really?! You're leaving off a little blinky blue LED?! Don't let the guys in the effects forum know... that's basically blasphemy to them...

oh, and if I can get the recording of our writing session last night, I'll show y'all a pretty wildly different roscoe tone...

Well, we decided that drilling a silly hole in the front of a beautiful piece of wood so you could see the little blinky blue LED was not such a great idea....and sticking it through the control cover on the back was pointless (you can't see it, and your belly doesn't care! ), not to mention, having wires attached to a cover that may need to be removed once in a while could create an issue one day....so, no little blinky blue LED.

Great Bass Tone

My drummer got a new set, and at rehearsal we commented, "Wow, what a great sounding set". He put his ear up to the drum and said "I don't hear anything". Yeah, great players make anything sound good. You are all over it.

reminds me of the story i've heard about chet atkins responding to a studio engineer who remarked how great his guitar sounded: *chet puts guitar on stand and steps away* "how's the guitar sound now?"

anyhow, i listened to 'i wish'--fantastic playing, great sound...i really dig

BTW, are the Bart Classic 6-string pups out yet?
