Interesting convo @ the studio tonight.

So, we're finishing up an album, and I have 3 basses that I'm using. My Roscoe, a P, and a borrowed Spector. Well, I get there today, and pull out my P for the song that we're laying down tracks for, and the producer/engineer, who's worked for some VERY big people, pulls me to the side. He goes, "'Chuck, got a minute? I want you to hear something." He plays the last session, and then starts talking about MHz's and whatnot, which is Greek to me. Then he says, "You know my resume, and you know who I've worked with. 'Chuck, this is THE best bass tone I've EVER heard. You're known for saying everything is the about the song, well, I need you to play that bass you played at the last session on the rest of these songs." I played the Roscoe on that day. I told him that the P was perfect for that song, and he was like, "Chuck, there are 2 basses that I swear by in the studio. Warwicks and whatever the hell that is you have." I told him it was a Roscoe, and he told me that from now on, ALL of the songs will have the Roscoe on it. I've heard of soundmen having bass preferences, but this is the first time I've encountered a producer/engineer like that. Props to the Roscoe crew. As soon as we get a rough mix, I'll post it here.

Good for you! Glad to hear you have a bass that has captured you producer. Oddly enough, I had a similar situation about 10 years ago. Went to a second session and whipped out my Jazz, and got the same treatment. "Pull out that bass you played last time. That thing sounds amazing!" Only mine was a freaking Carvin 6 string that I didn't even enjoy playing all that much. I had only taken it the time before because I needed a low B and this was before I had come home to 5 strings.

Specifically, 'Chuck's bass has Bart 9J1's in what we call the "JB" locations and an NTMB-F preamp.

My personal favorite pickup arrangement.

I'm guessing mine has a different pickup type (CB's) and the same preamp ?

Pretty much, the pickup locations are pretty different as well, which significantly affects the tone.

The "JB" placement is amazing.

I kept it simple. A stunning piece of ash, maple neck, wenge board, and natural. It was supposed to be trans white, but to color that grain would've been criminal. Keith was like, "Look, I'll still make it white if you want, but you need to see this thing first." After I saw the grain pattern on that ash body, it was "Natural it is!"
