LG3005 Fretless Strings

I just purchased my first Roscoe bass, LG3005 fretless. Previously owned but in as new condition. Absolutely awesome bass! Kind of wierd but I bought it sight unseen and had never played a Roscoe before. I purchased it based on the brand reputation, which I must say is well deserved.

Now to my question. What type of strings does Roscoe recommend for its fretless basses? This one came with a fresh set of RotoSound round wounds. However, I've heard that round wounds can damage fretboards on a fretless bass (this is my first fretless...wanted to try something new). I believe the fretboard on my bass is diamondwood but having purchased it "pre-owned" I can't be sure.

I guess that leads to a second question. Is there a way to find out what the original build was on this instrument? It would be interesting to know how it came out of the shop.

Thanks!

I use DR Nickel Low Riders on my fretless (not a Roscoe , hope to remedy that soon)

For question #2, should be a 4 digit serial number on the back of the headstock, post that and I bet Gard will help find the origin (if possible).

Oh, and post some pics.................

Congratulations of the Roscoe!

Roscoe's come with D'Addario nickel strings. The gauging is slightly different than the off the shelf D'Addario XL-5's (but real close).

Hey Chris, that bass has a Diamondwood fingerboard, which is pretty darn tough stuff. I've used stainless steel roundwound strings on that material for years, with little or no visible wear.

Right now, I'm using the DR Black Beauties on my fretless, I really like 'em.

I use stainless steel roundwounds on my SKB-3006 fretless exclusively. I did try some DR nickel's but I just love the extra bite the steels provide. I've gone from being excessively heavy handed to developing a soft touch with very low action and I cannot see any marring on the Diamondwood fingerboard at all...

I also use DR Black Beauties on my fretless LG3005, and love 'em.

+1 for the Nickel Low-Riders. Nice warm sound, smooth feel. I tried - and tried to like - the coated (i.e. Black Beauties) strings, but they had a "sticky" feel to them that I couldn't get used to. They sound great and they last, I agree with that part.

You could string a Roscoe with bailing twine and it'd still sound killer, so you really can't go wrong.

Though only briefly, these have been my experiences with those models of strings, exactly.

Best,

Hey,

Thanks to all of you who provided feedback on this subject. Big help all 'round.

It's great to be a Roscoehead!

Chris

Gard: I guess they don't call it Diamondwood for nothin' :-) I won't worry about damaging the fretboard. The Black Beauties would look killer on this bass too.
