Love my new SKB 3005

Finally got me a Roscoe thanks to Greg at Rocket Music. Greg was a pleasure to deal with and really worked with me with much patience to make sure I got the bass that was right for me.

On to the bass. Love the finish and the subtle beauty of the top. But the neck, oh the neck. Felt right the minute I picked it up. That has really never happened to me. Now I just need to find the right strings.

Roscoe really makes an amazing bass!

Pics...

Or you can see Gregs much nicer pics.

Fantastic to hear you've found the right bass man!

Congrats!

It's kindof a shame you want to change strings, them Black Beauties look smashing.

+1, the BBs just pop off the Maple Fingerboard.

Thanks guys.

The Black Beauties look cool and sound good but I'm not in love with the way they feel.

Going to try to use these for awhile the try some lighter gauge nickel strings or maybe try some Circle K's?

I use DR Sunbeams 40 - 120 on my SKB. I am curious about the Circle K's so if you try them you will have to share your thoughts.

Will do.

I used to use mainly DR Nickel Lo-Riders. That was on 34" scale though. Liked the Sunbeams too. I ordered a set of Circle K's and will throw them on when I get them.

I got the Black beauty's because it was about the only thing I could find local that would fit and wasn't steel.

Andy,

Gard uses the Black Beauties and he told Joe at the Georgia GTG that they take about two weeks and they feel like regular strings. I've never used 'em so I'm offering you second hand info so take from it what you will.

Clint's suggestion of Sunbeams is great, and I'd also recommend SIT's Nickel set (from Greg only, cause his are longer).

Glad to see the Roscoe turned out to be "the one" Congrats!

God Bless, Ray

They ARE steel. They're essentially Hi Beams that have the coating.

See Here (Copy & Paste);

DR BKB5-45 BLACK BEAUTIES COATED 5-STRING ELECTRIC BASS SET
Stainless steel, round core, medium gauge .45W, 65W, 85W, 105W, 125W, black coated strings for extended life and cool look too.

Congrats - a great looking bass! I know just what you mean about the Roscoe neck feeling just ... right ... on first play - I also will admit to never having experienced that before, and I feel it again every time I pick up my Roscoe!

I'm using DR Fat Beams on my SKB and they sound and feel great - lots of fundamental, full mids, enough highs (I don't like a super bright sound).

Enjoy that beautiful instrument!

First off---Beautiful bass!! I was always a big fan of how that one looked. Congrats.

As to the Black Beauties---I've been using them for a couple years now on most of the basses I've owned, and I use them exclusively on my two Roscoes now. It does take them a little bit to feel "normal", if you're used to traditional, non-coated strings. But once that initial period is over, I really don't notice much difference between them and regular strings. And I prefer the sound of them (especially on Roscoe basses) so much to other strings that I have given up on trying anything else. YMMV, of course.

Great looking Roscoe! I love the maple board with the tobacco burst finish! Classic and classy all rolled into one!

I found the DR BB's too tacky feeling also. regardless of what strings I try, I always come back to the nickel strings, based on tone and feel.

Thanks Ryan.

Do you normally use steel or nickel strings? I ask because these feel to me like regular steel strings. Which is what I didn't want.

Thanks Ray.

Knew they were steel going into it. Just thought they would feel different with the coating. I'll leave them on for a bit and see what happens. Have another bass that doesn't get played much for some reason? They might end up on that.

If you want sounds clips I can record some this weekend. Don't hold your breath though and don't expect much. I'm as meat and potatoes a player as they come.

No problemo mon! Just trying to help..

Apparently DR has a new coating that they're using that supposedly lasts longer than the original. Gard might chime in with some experience to tell us if it's as tacky as the original stuff.

They're also coating Nickel strings too. Just FYI.
