At the Roscoe GTG in Greensboro, Jimmy Haslip talked about his LG, and was asked about the pickup slant. He explained it in a combination "duh"/and "why didn't *I* do that?" moment. He said he convinced Keith to do the slant (remember he's playing upside down) so the pickup is a little closer to the bridge on the bass side and closer to the neck on the high side. This gives him a little more warmth on the C string, and a bit better articulation down low.
So after I got a chance to play his bass (mahogany body, pau ferro fingerboard), I knew that ash (what I had on my current, now Joe's) LG was not for me. I really wanted a copy of Jimmy's bass.
Well after talking to the Gardfather, discussing aesthetics, ergonomics (and being shamed about building a "fanboi" bass ) I settled on a build inspired by the man, but reflecting my own tastes and style as well. So here's what we came up with:
SKB3006 (my other 3 Roscoes are SKB, and I really like the body style)
Mahogany body/Quilt maple top
3 piece maple/purpleheart/maple neck
Pau Ferro fingerboard
Bartolini classic pickups/Bart 3 band preamp
"Reversed slant" pickups
Royal blue transparent finish
and the top we chose?
So this will be developing over the next few months. To say I'm excited is a HUGE understatement! |

I am glad you chose the body style you like (and have on your other basses) rather than copying the LG, and the colour choice is pretty cool as well. I am a sucker for almost all of Roscoe's trans gloss finishes on a nice quilt top like that, but the various types of blue really stand out as different (better!) than what any other builders are doing. |

In many years of owning various basses I have only had one ash-bodied bass that I really liked (a Zon lightwave fretless). And I've tried and tried others but there is just something about that wood that doesn't give me wood. I know most people dig it and as they say, "different strokes..."
Sweet looking build btw. Interested to hear the results.

When I read the title of the thread, the first thing I thought of was JimmyM and you were having Roscoe build you a custom P Lyte !

And I'm with you on the woods - that's why my dear Zon has a Guanacaste body (very similar to Mahogany). And sounds sooooo sweet.

Actually, adding the warmth to the highs and brightness to the lows is a GREAT idea!!! Gard - has my LG been routed yet!? ;-)

I remember having a few, "Did I really spec that?" moments with my blue bass, but less than a nanosecond into seeing it, I was ecstatic. Yours? Over that top, and against a pau ferro board? Three words come to mind: Dee. Lish. Ous. In your hands this is going to be an amazing spec - I can't wait to hear the music that comes from this instrument. Kudos! |

I always wondered why more builders didn't do it. It never made sense to me to slant the other way.

The crew couldn't find the exact finish color I was looking for, but I'm *very* pleased with this alternate choice: |
