I'm afraid I won't be doing that before the fall, so no ballgames will be included in the list of activities.

However, a "real GTG" is in the works....

Everyone,
I got a chance to hear these basses today, and let me say that they both sound as good as they look, which is great. Very versatile palette of tones which would just melt in your mouth, or melt your face off depending on what you wanted and through the right rig. Of course, Peter was gutting one of them when I went in. Something about not wanting any of those fancy treble controls. The fact that he's a great player doesn't hurt any, either.
Congrats on two great basses!

To my ears, they sounded thick and meaty, well defined, maybe a little less compressed than the standard Roscoe barts, but it's hard for me to tell if I was hearing more difference from the pickups themselves, or the placement of them. Several variables at work here, of course. I agree with Peter about the burp and growl from the bridge pup. The fretless, with the alder body, 60s pup placement and bridge pup soloed was very Jaco-ish sounding. I was struck, as I have been before listening to Roscoes, by the plethora of tones available by adjusting the pup blend and eq. For pure fretless, I think I like the standard Roscoe barts and placement a little better, due to the mwah factor of that setup. However, Peter's fretless is more versatile in that it can sound almost identical to a fretted bass with the right settings, whereas the standard setup really doesn't allow you to get away from that fretless sound. I guess this is more than you asked, just more of my impressions. I don't think the difference between the classic barts and roscoe barts would be huge by itself, but Peter has some other things going on with these basses that affect the sound also (such as the passive tone control instead of a treble adjust)

We are getting along very well. I was most excited about the fretted but gotta say the fretless may be my favorite. I hadn't played fretless in quite awhile but this one is just so good it's hard to put down. I may get a fretted with alder body to match. That's not to say the fretted with the walnut is going anywhere. It has exactly the tone I was hoping for with incredible upper register growl. It's a very aggressive bass in a warm sort of way. Keith and the boys did a great job. These are two of best basses I've owned.

How would you compare the CB's to, say, the Nordstrand Dual coils that you've heard?

Really glad to hear they're both working out for you so well!

I would say that the CB's have more lows, punchier mids and are warmer sounding. I would love to hear some in these basses so I can get a more accurate comparison but so far I've not liked the Nord dual coils in the basses I've heard them in. A friend of mine had the Nords in an SKB 6 and then put in the standard Roscoe Barts. Both he and I preferred the Barts in that bass. Nord duals have just been too bright and not deep enough sounding for me so far. I do like the big Singles and one of the other similar configurations.

that's pretty much what I came in here to ask about, since Gard is suggesting Bart CB p'ups for my next bass, and also suggested I talk to you about 'em. So I'll just be moving along then...
