NBD: Giving Roscoe a try.

A few years back at a local TB GTG, I had the opportunity to try an LG-3000. I really dug it and talked briefly with the owner aboug buying it but that fell through and I moved along. I play in a classic rock cover band and my main bass is a Sadowsky WL. As much as I've loved the WL, I do crave variety now and then, and my thoughts kept drifting back to that LG-3000.

The four-stringers don't come up for sale all that often and I had been building some money up in my gear fund and so I finally broke down and bought the LG-3000 that had been on my mind for so long. It's unlikely it will replace my Sadowsky as my main gigging bass but if it adds a nice tone to the arsenal i'll be thrilled with it. It definitely feels as well made and as comfortable as the Sadowsky. The only question for me is how it will sound in the mix. I've got gigs tonight and tomorrow night, which is great since the bass arrived on a day when my daughter was sick so I haven't had much chance to play it yet and don't really know how it will sound. It has the Demeter 18v pre.

Obligatory cell phone pic -- i'll take real pics when things settle down around here:

I'll post something more after the gig tonight if i can. I'm really, really looking forward to gigging it since it's so comfortable and well made and i have no idea how it will sound in the mix.

Many thanks to Gard for the advice!

My opinion would be AWESOME! Especially with that killer Cocobolo fingerboard and a Demeter pre. I loved one of my former Roscoe's that had a Cocobolo board.....sounded seriously fat and warm. What are the body woods?

Shenandoah (sp) will prefer the Roscoe over that "other" bass you mentioned.

How's your daughter doing? Any news lately?

EDIT; And congrats and welcome to the Roscoe world. A great Dad deserves a great bass.

Take care brother!

God Bless, Ray

Awesome! So great to hear this, and it's wonderful to see you posting over here too...I hope the family is doing well.

Probably stating the obvious here, but a completely different animal from the Sadowsky, for sure. Two different flavors of delicious.

It looks like cocobolo, but the seller had it listed simply as rosewood, so I wasn't expecting much. But I guess "rosewood" is like "whiskey" - used to describe everything from Old Crow to Lagavulin. Best piece of rosewood I've ever seen. The body top is tiger maple and the body is spanish cedar.

Thanks, Ray!

Kira's had a rough weekend. Lots of seizures but we've managed to stay out of the hospital. She seems to be on the upswing but between all the sleepless nights and a four-hour gig, I'm pretty wiped.

GIG REPORT:

I've played about 80 or so gigs since I got my Will Lee. In that entire time, it's probably had 95% of the gig time, which is a record for me - I'm usually a bass whore and play at least two basses on a typical four-hour gig, but not since the WL arrived. So given my "marriage" to the WL, I didn't think the Roscoe would get much playing time last night.

I played it the entire night, and never touched the Sadowsky. Not that it was a better sound -- for some songs (particularly the two songs I slap on) it was not really the right tool. But overall, it was just so much fun to play a bass with such a great feel but a completely different tone -- it made some old songs sound new again.

My drummer liked it a lot; he said he liked the aggressive tone of the WL better in some ways but really dug the way the Roscoe sat in the mix and he could hear every note, all the way up the neck, and how it sat right on top of the kick.

I think it's a keeper. Time will tell how much gigging time it gets. My suspicion is that it will get gigged regularly though, as it's tons of fun to play and is such a huge contrast to the WL.

It is most definitely getting gigged tonight but I'll probably try to give the WL one set just so I can experience the contrast of it in the mix better.

Nice Roscoe Bartman! I really love the top. The Roscoe's really sound nice with the Demeter pre too.

If it doesn't have to mid's that need (to cut live), changing to a Bart 3-band will definitely get you there. Both great sounds but quite different IMO.

Well, here's what I will be playing at tonite's gig. This will be the first time in two years that I have gigged a non-Roscoe bass.........

I have Ryan's koa Century 6 and I tried it out tonight. Awesome! First time I've gigged with a Roscoe and now I can't WAIT to get my fretless LG!

Just a trial for both of us right now. We swapped for a couple weeks to test them out.

Just an update: The swap stuck. I dug the Zon, Jonathan dug the Roscoe, so we made the trade permanent. That is, until I sneak down to Omaha and steal the Roscoe back.

So, now I only have two Roscoes. For now..........

Glad that both of you guys dig the basses!

Ryan,
I sure hope that this one doesn't haunt you like the "Brain"!

Man I am LOVING this bass. Digging the extra string so much I'm having Gard change my fretless order from a 5 to a 6.

I think I'm the only guy that can say 'I got my first Roscoe in a Chili's parking lot.'

...and suddenly I just made Roscoe sound like something you could get arrested for doing in public.

"Yeah man, I've been doing Roscoe since I was 22, started on Fenders, but they're really a gateway bass. I know a few guys who are experimenting with Dingwall, but that's just too out there for me."

Good call IMO. That's definitely next on my shopping list. Only problem is this terrible economy.
