Otto,
I had the Wilkenson bridge on several bas during that era. I actually though that it was a great design. There are a few sharp corners but they function very well. They were designed using an extrusion that could be cut to length for 4,5,6,7 ...string basses. You just added sliding saddles for additional strings. You can also adjust side to side string spacing.
Personally I don't think it would improve your sound by changing to the Hip Shot. Some builders (and players) actually believe that the thinner plate bridges transfer the sustain better than the more bulky bridges.
I'd just focus on upgrading to a 3-band pre.

otto,

I have a Wilkinson bridge on my mid '90s SKB2006, which is serial #3143 so it's just a little bit newer than yours. I like it just fine. That bass sounds killer with its slightly-larger-than-Roscoe Barts (more like MusicMan width) and a Bart 3-band pre-amp with a 3-position switch to control the midrange boost/cut frequency. It's the most tonally versatile of my 3 Roscoes, which is saying a lot.

The Wilkinson bridge is kinda handy since (within the limits of neck and pickup width) you can set it up to match one or more other basses whose string spacings aren't adjustable - like my two newer Roscoes. I've thought about replacing it, but it's not urgent.

The Hipshot bridges available for sale through normal channels are NOT, by the way, the same as the ones built to spec for Roscoes. I found this out only after I bought one and found it to be totally different. So if you do decide to update your bridge, get ahold of Gard first and run the idea past him.

Enjoy!
