New to me: #5550

This was from a local player, and an opportunity too good to pass up:

I have the saddles practically bottomed out, the relief close to 0.30 mm (above 8th fret, 1st & 24th fretted) and it looks like it's going to need a shim to get even lower action.

Other than that, I am still in my first 24 hours of ownership and still speechless at the workmanship, the tone (!!!), the neck, the feel, and the aesthetics. It's one of those "where have you been all these years?" moments.

Specs:

LG 3005
Exhibition Quilt Maple top
Spanish Cedar body
Light Amber finish
Bartolini preamp & pickups
Spalted Purpleheart fingerboard
Graphite nut
Black hardware

(Thanks, Gard, for the history lookup!)

He's absolutely right. Sorry, man.

Great looking bass, too. It matches my SKB.

No, but my friend who bought his Roscoe from Club Bass a few months ago has a Century Standard V that looks exactly like dataBASS5's, except with black DR strings.

I've been shedding on this thing like mad. And I'm beginning to understand why. With the exception of some really nice Smiths or old skool MTDs, there's nothing else that seems to sit so nicely in the mix on the lower strings... then, above the 12th fret on the D and G, takes on a whole different characters... just a warm, round, singing quality.

Just awesome.

Great points, Dave....in fact I love the low B on my Rocoes much more than on my old Smith. Very FAT, yet never loose or boomy. The 'middle' notes - where the money is, if you ask the old-school cats - are really right in the Roscoe wheelhouse, IMO. Just enough growl...and bark if you so desire...to cut, but the compressed sweetness (that extends to the highs) that is just pure Roscoe brings a smile to my face every time I pick up the bass(es).

Absolutely true.

This was in the bag for me but my wife needed to go for some unexpected medical tests and I just didn't think adding a 3rd Roscoe to the ol' arsenal was a priority.

I was going to do a deal early this week, but just couldn't hook up with Alex(?) due to the above.

In any case, you got a great bass (exhibition top) for a great price and you will LOVE IT!!! Wait till you gig that thing.

BTW.... I did a gig tonight with my SKB-3005 with Barts and it was amazing. I planned to do my 2nd set with my 30th Anni Stingray and after 1 song, I went back to the Roscoe...

P.S. The B on 35" Roscoes is IMO BY FAR the best available. Better than Smith, EBMM, Sadowsky, Ritter, Lakland... and a few others I have owned/tried.

Enjoy!

Nice bass.

I've just picked-up a very similar (except of the back/bodywood) LG3005 from an online shop in Sydney:

http://www.bassgeardirect.com.au/Ros...ge%20Multi.jpg

This was bought then returned, so I got it for a resonable price.

I tried out some speakers at this guy's demo room using an SKB. I bought the speaker and then started to look for another bass. I tried a lot of high end basses but none of them compared to my memory to the SKB3005. So I contacted the shop and said I'd take the bass as well - but someone had beaten me to it.

A few weeks later this LG3005 was returned to them and they emailed me a said it was available. I ummed and errred and nearly bought a Ken Smith BSR5 EG but I couldn't beat the value (particularly in these uncertain times).

So now I'm waiting on the Roscoe and can still look forward to buying a Ken Smith one day.

I am in love with this thing. The tone, the feel, but even moreso, the looks.

A few quick shots in the studio:

Just wow. Dave, those pics are stunning. I'm an avid (albeit a hack) student of photography, and I love seeing what a pro can do. Thanks for the inspiration! The headstock shot is probably my favorite, although I do love the, "Ahh...that's how he does it" last shot. Speaking of headstocks, I hope you won't mind a mild hijack with my feeble effort, considering we both have spalted purpleheart fingerboards...

I really like your website as well - awesome work! And since I'm a big Audi fan, those shots rang a bell. But that Hawaiian sunset shot...incredible.

Nice... The spalted purpleheart fretboard is what sold me on this LG.

re: photo, Thanks, though you don't always need a studio full of lighting gear to achieve these kinds of shots. You'd be amazed at how much you can do with indirect daytime window light, a white reflector (white foamcore will do), and a concerted effort to clean up your backgrounds. That, and anal retentive things like rotating all of the tuners to face the frame before you shoot the picture...
