New Roscoe owner!

Grettings
After playing Spector for almost 20 years i bought a Roscoe.
Roscoe LG3005
BTW..pics don't do justice on the beauty of this bass.(6077)
I have not tested the bass yet(plugged in) since i got it yesterday a little bit before having to go to work but i messed around with it a little bit and i'm digging it a lot.Nice neck and fretboard, good string spacing and off course beautiful craftsmanship. So i guess i'll be stoping by more often.(I've been lurking around but not posting)

Welcome aboard!

You got a nice one! I've been watching that one. Great price too. Let us know what you think after you get a chance to play it out a few times.

Nice bass. Amber shade is awesome. But my favourite part is the quilt pattern: a bit of burl around the neck pickup, it's like magnetic field on steroids! It makes for a unique bass. Excellent, congratulations!

I did and it sounded great......i played thru and Eden WT550 and a Aguilar gs 2x12.
I have to learn how to use the controls on the bass,i want to be able to get that sort of burpy sound.Do i add more bass..or less bass more mids or less what's the trick?
I did use the pan at the center, the bass a little past the center and the mid a little more than the bass, treble was halfway from off to the center position.
Any tips would be appreciated.

Cool! I really like the WT550 heads. I'm sure that the Roscoe sounded real nice through it and the Aggie cab.

Sounds like you might want to add a touch more mids (maybe pull-out on the pot to get to those juscy upper mids) if you're going for that burpy tone. You may also want to try panning the p/u blend just a bit toward the bridge p/u too.

That Bart 3-band is a very versatile preamp. Have fun playing with it!

Roscoeheads all have their favorite. But a lot of 'em really like the DR Black Beauty strings. They do really sound nice on the Roscoe's. Ral nice mids and some sizzle on the highs. I found them to be a bit tacky feeling though, as is the case with most SS strings. I really like the DR nickel strings (low Riders) but for some strange reason I always migrate back to the Roscoe D'Addario XL nickels. It's a great overall string for all styles of music. And the nickel is kinder to your frets!

Jerry's real high on the Cleartone strings but I'm yet to try them. I'm considering it though......They sound great on his recordings though (that might just be Jerry though!).

I think that Greg's real high on the SIT strings. Maybe he'll chime in on those. I installed a set of the SIT brite (?) nickel on a local players bass and they sounded real good. I'm not sure how well they hold up.

I've always been a D'Add. fan, mostly because they're cheap, sound good, and easy to get.... But having said that, I'm gonna try a set of Cleartone's - The gauges aren't quite what I prefer but gonna give 'em a whirl non-the-less, wanna put the durability to the test....

OK, I'll chime in with my general opinion on strings. I've only used the D'Addario Nickels thus far on the Roscoe Though.

I've used both the Cleartones and SIT strings on my Jazz Bass. I'll break it down this way;

Cleartones are very "even" across the tonal spectrum VERY good for a Jazz Bass. They fill the "mid hole" that Jazzes seem to have. They have great tension, neither loose nor tight. They feel close to DR strings texture wise (slightly rough). Thus far they are my favorite strings on the Jazz.

SIT's are VERY smooth texturally. They are a little stiffer than the Cleartones/DR's I've tried. They sound great and are lasting quite a long time. I've had the same set on since the GTG in March and they still have the new string zing. Although my Jazz sees about 1/4 of the action that it did pre March.. The only thing that I have against the SIT's personally is the slightly higher tension. I got used to the looseness of the Round Core DR's because they allowed me to do things the stiffer strings wouldn't because of my limited right hand technique. They are great strings overall though.

I've yet to venture a new set on the Roscoe so I'm in the same boat But I seem to fancy sumthin' Blue

God Bless, Ray

Having just put a set of Cleartones on my fretted SKB, I'd recommend them even more. It's like getting a boost in both the 250 and 800hz range, without negatively affecting any other part of the spectrum. I'm amazed, even though at this point I shouldn't be. Tension-wise, I find them to be very similar to the D'Add nickels...but sonically they're worlds apart. A bit brighter, definitely deeper, and even happier in the mids. Using an analogy generally reserved for speaker cabs, it's like someone took the blanket off. Compared to the MTD SS strings, the Cleartones are stronger in the mids, and have a bit more tension to them...so much so that I needed to tweak the truss rod a bit 24 hours after installing the new strings.

Anyway, there are a lot of great strings out there that play very nicely with Roscoes. Gard has cautioned against tapered strings to ensure proper intonation, but honestly I never encountered an issue until the recent changes MTD made to their specs. Nonetheless - the advice is worthy. You can run out of length on the B-string saddle screw pretty quickly, and the E-string won't be far behind.

Ken Smith, just about any flavor of DR (if you're a nickel fan, it just doesn't get any better than Sun Beams, IMO), obviously D'Adds...just be careful on the length, etc. They all work, and it's certainly worth experimenting a bit to see what really does it for you. If you do go Cleartone, it's worth talking with either them or a dealer about any custom gauges. They were really gracious with me, offering a few different choices for a C-string (I went .032, and couldn't be happier), and I believe they may have some options for the heavier strings too. Their .130 B-string is perfect, IMO. Slight taper (nothing like MTD, or even Smith), but I had no trouble with intonation and the setup is THIS low.

I hope that helps a little - good luck, and enjoy the Roscoe!

Meant to comment on this in my earlier post...boy is my mind a dangerous thing. Total IMO/IME here, but you've got a bass that emphasizes punchy lower mids and an amp/cab rig that is rather mid-scooped...especially the cab. I have no doubt you can get the sound you're after, but it may require a bit of experimentation. FWIW, my first stab would be on the bass - boost the upper mids a wee bit, and slightly bias the bridge pickup. If you notice the lows seem to drop off, you can certainly boost them a bit to compensate. That bridge pickup is really upper-mid happy, and this just might do the trick. Beyond that, it might be time to start playing with the EQ settings on the Eden. A bit more complicated there, but if you can tell us your current baseline settings, maybe we can offer a few suggestions? Good luck...

+1. I think a lot of use drooled over that one. You're gonna love it.
Welcome Aboard.

To get you up to speed on the Roscoe Forum...
Greg (Rocket Music) Drinks Bud Light but Gard and Darkstrike among others say it's not real beer.

Joe (JOME77) wants to put black hardware ON EVERYTHING!

Ray (Lil Ray) & Billy (Darkstrike) are the resident poets/comedians. Hence the Billy-Ray Show thread. Think of it as the fence around the heyenas' pen at the zoo.

Jerry (Vroom Vroom) Steve (Ubone) and Joe (JOME77) are resident gurus do to their years of experience. They answer questions based on experience, musical prowess and willingness to make stuff up when necessary.

And GARD well he's the GARDfather, #1 Saints fan and tempter of potential buyers with the coolest new bass pictures seen anywhere. Rumor has it that he has been listed as "the cause" in several divorce proceedings.

Plus a lot of other fun and shall we say interesting guys.

All in all the funnest place to hang out on TB. (Along with Rocket Music)

And just when you think where the heck do they find these guys....take a deep breath...look in the mirror and face the truth...

YOU ARE A ROSCOEHEAD

All the Fenders, Sadowskys, Smiths, etc combined ain't gonna cure it.

First of all, I have been remiss in welcoming a new family member to the fray. Hi, welcome
