Since we've had so many new folks join the Roscoe family over the last year or so, I thought I'd open up an old poll...but without actually reviving the old thread. Since polls with voting options don't necessarily lend themselves to the best of discussions, we'll keep it simple.
Which Roscoe body shape to you prefer?
and...
Do you prefer Roscoes with exotic, figured, natural tops or do you prefer Roscoes with colored maple tops?

If I ever do another custom order I think I'd like a SKB with slanted pickups.

I like the figured natural tops and prefer them to be lighter so that they don't show fingerprints badly.
Lighter fingerboards......... |

In the case of my bass, that meant a myrtle burl top and a mac. ebony board |

Although I own an LG3000 and very briefly owned two SKB3005's; at the end of the day I would probably prefer the Century body over the LG or SKB as I prefer larger bass bodies... As for woods... I prefer simple non exotic tops, painted, burst or trans.
Gard if you're listening - wanna trade my Burl Buckeye LG3000 for a plain jane painted four string century?

For my own part I prefer 4 stringers, (although I own a couple of fivers including an SKB) I prefer the SKB shape and I like natural wood finishes in the main although a really great quilt maple top with Roscoe red or emerald green finish is also hard to beat. So too, for that matter, is the killer pinstripe maple LG3000 finished in tobacco burst which The Perfect Bass have in stock at the moment.
Natural finish top woods? Ziricote can be beautiful as can cocobolo, I'm beginning to appreciate bubinga more after some stunners that Gard has posted pics of in the last few months and I love masur birch (I've seen a couple of MTBs and a Benavenete using this wood and they were both utterly stunning). Ultimately though I'm a sucker for a highly flamed piece of redwood or a spectacularly spalted bit of maple. Actually, I'm just a wood whore - I love it all...
For the board my preference is always going to be for something which is going to tonally compliment the body woods and the electronic package - if I had to a pick a wood for the board which I simply found most aesthetically pleasing it would be either highly figured cocobolo or chechen.

4 string= century sig.
5 string= SKB
6 string= Century sig.\SKB

So based on looks alone I like the SKB not small but not large body. I reserve the right to change my mind but I can't buy any more basses for a looooong time now. |

Woods woods woods
For shape, well I've got a LG and a SKB and can't make up my mind on which I like best.

SKB, all the way. To me it is one of the most aesthetic body shapes in the bass world, not just Roscoes.
The LG body looks a little off-kilter and I prefer straight pickups.
The top horn looks unnaturally long on the Century.
As for woods, either exotic or maple can be great but nothing too bizarre, it's a case by case basis. |

I have a spalted maple top, with a clear satin finish. Wouldn't change it for anything. |

I just visited your Web site. Based on what I see posted there in Roscoe land I'd say you already know what most of us like in a Roscoe!
Incredible selection of Roscoes! |

Yeah...I wasn't going to say anything, but this thread really isn't about "market research". I already have a pretty darn good feel for what makes a good Roscoe. But...I do enjoy hearing from my fellow Roscoeheads. I've been a little too absent from Talkbass lately and just thought I'd touch base with everyone to see what their thoughts were on the topic. Something tells me you like SKB bodies with pin line spalted maple tops and fretless fingerboards!!!
Happy Thanksgiving, Joe! |

I'm definitely more of a fan of highly figured natural tops than colored maple. I mean, they look nice, but it seems like everyone and their mother has a quilted or flamed maple top these days, they all seem to run together in my mind. Coffee table basses FTW.
