O/T (Again?): Madonna...who knew?

Hey Folks,

Had a cool gig last night, and one of the tunes gave me a few nervous moments, so I thought I'd share....

The corporate band I play in is undergoing a serious remarketing effort, to include a whole slew of new tunes. Just finalized last week was a medley of Madonna's hits. Although I received the chart at that time, I was recovering from shoulder surgery and didn't have a chance to peek at it. So, fast-forward to yesterday. I got to shed the chart a little bit, but without any benefit of "real time." My biggest concern was the transition from song-to-song. I'd be pretty much bare naked on each one, and I certainly didn't want to lead the band off of a cliff. Since the gig was a one-take-only live video shoot, I sweated a bullet here and there.

Here's the chart:

How'd I do? Feel free to critique - here's the board mix:

Definitely a flub or two, and you can tell where I did my best to make a page change without puking on myself. Note: no Roscoe instrument was harmed during this gig. Our man, Greg, however, may have some interest though. What you're hearing is the DI feed out of the Shuttle 9.0, with mild compression inline there behind it.

Hi Jerry,

Here is my feedback. Bass: very nice job, especially on some obviously tricky transitions. Nice bass tone as well.

Vocals: to my ears a little pitchy. All in all, quite impressive for a corporate band running DI.

Muy Bueno.

Thanks, Joel! I appreciate the feedback...even if you were a little too generous on my behalf. Not to defend singer-folk too vigorously, but they were struggling a bit. Between the stage mix and the FoH mix, their monitors were rendered nearly useless. And the newest singer was fighting a pretty nasty cold. But nonetheless....you're correct.

FYI on this gig. It's something offered by the Expression College. The good news, is based on a selection process, the cost for raw four-camera HD footage and a ProTools raw mix is....free. No kidding. The caveat...you're the case study for two separate college classes on sound reinforcement & capture and lighting & video production. The course instructors...and they're wizards....are there, but once things go "live," it's all in the hands of the students. So, essentially, you get one hour of performance time, and you get the good stuff and the bad.

FWIW, here's the result of last year's effort, with a smaller version of the same band:
