Off-topic warning: Todd Smallie

Caught this earlier today, and wanted to share with my Roscoe brothers and sisters.

Todd Smallie. I've been a huge fan of his for ~ 12 years now. Absolute badass who supports the music and those making it. Blistering chops, but you'd never know it unless the song calls for it. Anyway, I may be preaching to the choir, but if not...you owe it to yourself to pick up every Derek Trucks recording. Anyway...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jciUs4ZrmJY

That's Todd w/ Yonrico Scott, his rhythm section partner-in-crime in the Derek Trucks Band...and another one of those unsung cats who can just shred you to pieces with his chops, but instead makes everything groove hard and feel good.

Anyway, I love the setting, and the notion of "paying it forward" by sharing the gift of music with the next generation. Sit back with your favorite beverage and enjoy...and if you're like me, silently curse him for the flawless intonation.

I know we occasionally chat about how some cats would sound playing a Roscoe. Can you imagine what music Todd Smallie would create with one in his hands?

Yup, very, very cool indeed.

I can see what you mean about what he'd do with a Roscoe, this is a Curbow, with a Diamondwood board right? So a Roscoe would probably be in his wheelhouse...

Just so our man Pete remains interested, here he is ripping off a solo on a Mawd-you-luss.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7426RZq5Axs

And here's one of him "paying the bills."

Bad. Ass.

Jerry,
Thanks a million! I just loved it; as a father myself who has raised 2 girls with music in every part of our daily lives, I really love to see this. I have been to both girls' schools to speak to the children about what I do as an arborist, but never as a (hack) musician. Those 2 guys seemed genuine as well.
Will search and purchase their music via iTunes asap.

Side note- this reiterates to me that a great drummer can really open things up for a good to great bassist. So many drummers I have played with are either way too "Meat & Potatoes" or they feel they have to play YYZ in each 4 bar blues piece. Don't capitalize on the space and how to play within it

Those children are very lucky; Man, wish I could have had sick jazz chops before recess with my mid-morning snack and sippy cup!

Brother "J", I presume (hope) you were referring to me with the Moddy reference. Still have mine and will keep it, for now at least, for sentimenal reasons - props to Gard for his assistance as well

Just saw your last post and enjoyed it as well. Fantastic stuff.
Now, must put down hamburger and practice bass (gonna need lots & lots of practice....).

Pete

Yeah, I had no idea he was that good... like Jerry says, he shows a great deal of restraint in his "usual" playing. I actually saw him live with DTB last year, and I thought he was OK. Everything he played was tasty and fine, it just wasn't like Oteil playing with Derek. Smallie's seems to be more of a supporting role rather than an in-your-face interplay role.

I'm always impressed by cats like this who can happily dial it back to serve the artist. Kudos to him!

I've said the same thing to Danny here at the shop several times: "If I could play like that, I'd play like that all the time". And Danny always says "no, you wouldn't". I think he's right, but it's hard not to imagine myself wanting to shred all the time if I could...

Just checked out the Modulus clip... man, I think part of my under-appreciation of him is he makes it sook so easy. His hand motions are so small and tight. It doesn't LOOK like he's doing anything, but he's playing his butt off...

Man I love watching and hearing an outstanding bassist playing wicked assed solo's and grinning like the Cheshire cat the whole time. His tight, compact playing is facilitated by playing a Six Banger, everything within range. Chops galore and the sense to lay down the groove for the benefit of the song. A true musician...

I got fairly hefty mitts, but them sausage fangers move like a three toed sloth.

Great clip Very talented to be able to play a sixer AND SING. (in pitch).

You guys find some amazing players to show me how good one should be, and how good I COULD be.

I'm a persistant snot but some of the stuff that can be done is jaw dropping.

Guess I Better practice more.

God Bless, Ray

I feel kinda' silly quoting whole posts, but...well, that whole post was worthy of quoting. Spot-on, Greg. I did specifically want to comment on your sentiments about Oteil...with Derek Trucks, but also in any other environment. In my listening experience, there are three rhythm section cats who can get away with "being themselves" no matter the gig. Vinnie Colaiuta, Marcus Miller, and Oteil. You always....always know when you're listening to those guys. Vinne, in particular...good freakin' grief. And, you knew this had to be a setup...here's the punchline. "Space Captain" on Herbie Hancock's latest...you get Vinnie playing Vinnie with Oteil playing Oteil.

Watching that first vid again...and marvelling at the intonation...I just love how these guys play together. Totally two birds of a feather. Yonrico Scott is one bad, bad fellow, yet his ears are the most-used tools in his arsenal.

Excellent, Pete...and you know that Modulus love was directed your way for sure.

Man, tonight's gig totally puts your comment about drummers in bold...and italics. I hope I don't come off as a jerk when I say this, but...well, I'll just say it. In the past month I've said yes to some gigs that I've gotten in the habit of turning down. $$, when it comes right down to it...it's been a rough stretch with some unexpected bills, and let's just say that financial planning is not a personal strong suit. I figured the gigs would be an easy way to pay them off more quickly. Which was true, but wow...the lessons learned. Totally made me appreciate the gigs where I play with great musicians who listen, challenge, take the music to new places...especially the cats in the drum chair. My last three gigs...downright painful. However, on tonight's hit there were some amazing players, and I couldn't wipe the smile off my face if I'd tried.

Bottom line - there's no better joy than playing with cats who inspire you.

Added my sentiment to an otherwise spot on statement.

I'll give my piddling opinion in this manner;

I'm no pro by any means. But my ultimate goal in life is to be the very best possible. And having said that I have no clue where my limitations lie. Be they mentally (standard) or for me physically.

I'll always strive to mimic Jamerson, Wooten, Burbridge, (now Smallie) but who knows where I'll end up.

I'm only posting this to reiterate how much of an inspiration and a blessing that you guys are for me.

Y'all keep inspiring, and showing me who inspires you.

Thanks again,

God Bless, Ray
