I come to you with a request for your vote. Looming on my calender is one very, very cool gig. I'll be playing with a quintet at Yoshi's in San Francisco on Dec. 6. This is the lounge - not the main concert hall - but it is, nonetheless, Yoshi's. Getting the obvious out of the way first, this is, of course, a gig that calls for a Roscoe instrument. However, I have the added (cough!) problem (/cough!)....of choosing which Roscoe.
This is where you come in. I'm one amazingly lucky rat bastage in that I have four magnificent Roscoe instruments...all of which being entirely valid for this gig...swing, salsa, bossa & samba, funk, bop, and most things in-between. So, which will it be? Fertile Myrtle: the veteran of the group, a jazz standard in its own right. The sweetest and purest of the bunch. The Red Devil: taking no prisoners, with equal amounts of warmth and grind. It's time in Georgia added maturity and even new ways of seducing players and listeners. The Blue Angel: fretless gets no more enjoyable. You're lured in with mwah, and then attacked mercilessly by the sheer Jaco-ish-ness of tone that can even conquer and mask my intonation. Still-in-need-of-a-name: the new kid on the block. Envious good looks and just nasty tone. Not to be trifled with.
I'm torn, 'Heads...please help. At first glance, it seems like a Fertile Myrtle gig. She's the incumbent...the one that's gotten me here. And because of the other three, the one that's been feeling neglected of late.
But then there's the Red Devil. The bass that truly plays itself and just flat works. And then the Blue Angel...that fretless tone draws me in, but I worry about stage lighting...me, the dark, and a fretless...oooh, I don't wish that on anyone. And finally, the bubinga beast (please chime in with name suggestions)...the latest to the dance, and the one that makes as strong a sonic impression as it does a visual one.
Help! |

But, I'm a traditionalist in that I follow the "Dance with the one that brought you" line of thinkin'.
With that said, Fertle Myrtle gets first nod, with one of the others batting cleanup. Would you carry two?
And I offer as a moniker for D020 Two possible ideas #1 Archangel or Man E. Faces.
Whatcha think?
God Bless, Ray

As for a name, the Batman fan in me wants to say Two-Face, the 'rassin fan Dos Caras(Spanish for Two Faces/famous Mexican luchador), the sensible part of me wants to stop making bad suggestions....

As is true with most women, this chick has many personalities!
Plan B- Myrtle and Sybil (both) and perhaps have on hand the Red Devil for a Threesome
(Hope Pacman doesn't put me in time-out for my naughty post) |

I love that venue, and she is an absolutely stunning eye catcher. And, a little more cut might be nice in that room.

As to naming your new instrument, how about "The Zinga with Bubinga", or simply "Bub"? |

That blue fretless is very nice. You have any sound clips? Interesting pickup placement. I like that neck pickup . . . more in the sweet spot. |

| | Setec Astronomy | | | | | The Sentimentalist in me says Myrtle should be the one...after all she's stood by you this entire time. But, as Joel said, it would be pretty sweet to break-in the newbie at Yoshi's.
My vote is take both. Give Myrtle the honor of starting the first set and work in the new one as you see fit.
As for a name...in honor of Dr. Sheldon Cooper...BAZINGA!

Here's a clip of the fretless... 'Round Midnight
Kinda' looking like the veteran vs. the rookie at this point... |

I had the pleasure of playing that and til this day...IMO of course, it is one of the BEST Roscoe my hands have ever touched! I was also fortunate enough to play SF Yoshi's (wedding gig) a couple of months ago and your in for a real treat my friend. Matter of fact, I used my old LG3005 for the gig! I think i have some pics, will try and post... Enjoy and looking forward to hearing the tunes and viewing some pics!

I wish we ALL had your dilemma - "Which exquisite 6-string Roscoe should I choose?" SHEEESH!
Man, I would go with the most versatile of all of them. If you can't bring more than one, I would exclude the fretless, simply because it's more "type cast" than the fretted basses. Less flexible.
JUST ME! But I would exclude the Red Devil, just because, for a jazz gig, I would rather have a smooth instrument that I can make sound more rock/pop, than trying to rein back a monster on a leash all night.
That leaves either the Myrtle Turtle, or the Bubinga Bomber. If you're comfortable with the new axe, why not deepen the honeymoon period and bring that?
JUST ME, guys.

Fertile Myrtle gets the nod from me. A combination of total class and faithfulness. How can you not take Myrtle? | | Thread Tools | Search this Thread | | | |
