Outside the polls

A thread in another forum talking about bassists less frequently talked about or heard of gave me a flash back, just thought I'd share.

Jeff Andrews: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NL69e81aZ1c

I had the pleasure of studying with Jeff for a while about 20 years ago: It forever changed me!

Here's another good one: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xb6PkN5ezGc - even though I'm not a Mike Stern fan and even less of a fan of Weckl but, slamming bass solo.

Thumbs up

Yeah! Great playing! I really enjoy Tom Kennedy with Weckl too. He's a monster! I guess that he's a bit more of a household name in the world of bass though. Although I only recently discovered him.

Man, I love Jeff Andrews! Thanks for the clips. I'm not a Weckl guy, but Jeff Andrews makes him sound good. I've always thought of him as a true bass player's bass player, if that makes sense. (Lincoln Goines is another...extending the Mike Stern connection one level.)

Yes, Lincoln Goines - another name I've not heard in a while. All sorts of dormant synapses firing off.... Man, I love Haden on Bop Be with Jarrett, which of course makes ya think of Gary, such a smooth player... Oh, another spark, LaFaro, man if he were still alive. I feel ya with Weckl, amazing technician but just always leaves me dry; I'm looking for Elvin or Tain for a fix.

Cool - I'd never heard of Jeff Andrews, thanks for turning me onto him!

Although I must say, I'm a big Weckl fan... loved him w/ Chick and Pattitucci...

Weckl is a great technician but he doesn't feel music and as a result his playing has always sounded uninspired and flat. I'm a huge fan of bass and percussion that is really listening to each other, feeling the groove, and complementing each others playing. Thats the real magic in my long standing opinion anyway. There are so many great bassists that have served as influences that I would be hard pressed to name them all, and many great drummers that have influenced my playing as well. It is all about the groove.

Yeah, good stuff there - but with 'Now he Sings Now he Sobs' out there - Roy Haynes on drums and Miroslav Vitous on bass, mmmm, that's a tough follow up even though the electric band is probably not a fair comparison, totally different thing going on with that.... Having said that, there was definitely a time when pumping out 'Got a Match' was the bar... Just was a long time ago for me... Or, I may just be getting too old

Yep, we're all getting old. I still catch myself hearing the intro to some Madonna or Cyndi Lauper song from the 80's (a song that I no doubt HATED when it came out), but the tune will recall good times and I find myself getting a lift... until I realize it's Madonna or Cyndi Lauper

Tears For Fears is the worst... they're actually a guilty pleasure of mine. I'll just ride the song all the way through...

Did I just admit all of that on TB? Especially in a fusion heavy thread? Oh, man, there goes the reputation...

Lost me @ Celine Dion. I'd rather listen to Weckl. Last time I caught Weckl was with Chick Corea. Victor Wooten was on bass, and he left Weckl with NO CHOICE but to GROOVE. It was cool to hear Weckl in that vein. Stunning chops, gorgeous tuning, amazing sound...it was sweet to hear him stay in the pocket for more than four seconds. Yet another notch in the bedpost for Victor.

Ok, Greg, I can make you feel better about things. I've seen Madonna live. Even paid for the ticket my own self.

Now, before you cringe, I offer four words by way of my defense:

Victor. Bailey. Omar. Hakim.

I rest my case, your Honors.

To help fuel the thread, I'd like to offer up another cat...

James Genus.
He's on upright here... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5yqhO4saX6g ... but it's one of my favorite Metheny/Brecker compositions.

Thank you for putting up with that. Now...fasten your seatbelts please: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UIGsSLCoIhM

Oh yes, James was a local boy here until the late 80's, crossed paths a few times in NYC - my last few years in NYC were his first few.

Anyway:
- Lonnie Plaxico: http://www.lonnieplaxico.com/
More so than a bassist I really dig his compositions, check this: http://www.lonnieplaxico.com/mp3/wes...tories/WSS.mp3

No doubt - and to add to it, some of the best I've heard have been 15/16 year old kids as I drive around passing by little street corner churches on a Sunday.
