Jeff Andrews: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NL69e81aZ1c
I had the pleasure of studying with Jeff for a while about 20 years ago: It forever changed me!

I guess that he's a bit more of a household name in the world of bass though. Although I only recently discovered him. |

I've always thought of him as a true bass player's bass player, if that makes sense. (Lincoln Goines is another...extending the Mike Stern connection one level.) |

Man, I love Haden on Bop Be with Jarrett, which of course makes ya think of Gary, such a smooth player... Oh, another spark, LaFaro, man if he were still alive. I feel ya with Weckl, amazing technician but just always leaves me dry; I'm looking for Elvin or Tain for a fix.

Although I must say, I'm a big Weckl fan... loved him w/ Chick and Pattitucci... |

I'm a huge fan of bass and percussion that is really listening to each other, feeling the groove, and complementing each others playing. Thats the real magic in my long standing opinion anyway. There are so many great bassists that have served as influences that I would be hard pressed to name them all, and many great drummers that have influenced my playing as well. It is all about the groove. |

Having said that, there was definitely a time when pumping out 'Got a Match' was the bar... Just was a long time ago for me... Or, I may just be getting too old

I still catch myself hearing the intro to some Madonna or Cyndi Lauper song from the 80's (a song that I no doubt HATED when it came out), but the tune will recall good times and I find myself getting a lift... until I realize it's Madonna or Cyndi Lauper
Tears For Fears is the worst... they're actually a guilty pleasure of mine. I'll just ride the song all the way through...
Did I just admit all of that on TB? Especially in a fusion heavy thread? Oh, man, there goes the reputation... |

Victor Wooten was on bass, and he left Weckl with NO CHOICE but to GROOVE. It was cool to hear Weckl in that vein. Stunning chops, gorgeous tuning, amazing sound...it was sweet to hear him stay in the pocket for more than four seconds. Yet another notch in the bedpost for Victor.
Ok, Greg, I can make you feel better about things. I've seen Madonna live. Even paid for the ticket my own self.
Now, before you cringe, I offer four words by way of my defense:
Victor. Bailey. Omar. Hakim.
I rest my case, your Honors.
To help fuel the thread, I'd like to offer up another cat...
James Genus.
He's on upright here... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5yqhO4saX6g ... but it's one of my favorite Metheny/Brecker compositions.
Thank you for putting up with that. Now...fasten your seatbelts please: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UIGsSLCoIhM |
