Since then I've been through 10 basses (a few of which i still have) searching for one that could stack up to what my Roscoe was. The closest i came was a custom Benavente but unfortunately because of some financial issues I had to part with it last year. The recent price increase, while well deserved , put a new Roscoe out of my price range in the near future. So I've been biding my time, waiting for the right trade or sale to come along to get another Roscoe.
The time has come!!!!
I've traded my Dingwall for this:
Needless to say I'm pretty excited about re-entering the Roscoe family! I'll post new pics when she arrives at her new home in a few days

Nice looking bass, based on the bridge, that is a mid 90's vintage (Wilkinson, not Hipshot). Nice top, and the fingerboard MAY be Brazilian Rosewood!

Yeah, those price increases coupled with increased gas prices (and everything that affects) make Roscoes a bit harder to pay for!
I really like the color of the burst! |

Interesting knobs on the preamp. They look like EMG knobs but I doubt that is the case.
Gard, are they simply older Bart knobs or is there a secret weapon hidden in there?

That'd be cool....

If it had the bart package i was thinking about upgrading to an different pre as already have a bart/bart setup in another bass. I suppose i may not have to now (but those knobs must be changed )

You'd be hard-pressed to find that.
I think the best way to figure out how this setup will sound is.......to PLUG IT IN!!

The pre was very different from the standard Bart setup but quite functional. Very snappy sound, crisp in the very high frequencies and not shy on bass. Very 90s! With the stock Bart pickups I'm guessing it will be a little more familiar - probably a neat setup. |

I have gotten the bass. It is only 57 serial numbers earlier than the bass I had stolen. I'm making the assumption that that means that it was made 57 basses earlier than my old one. That being said i notice a few differences in them. My old one had more rounded body edges, while this one has more squared off. Not a big deal, but just an observation. One thing i really like about it is that it has a veneer of what i assume is maple between the spanish cedar and the flamed top. It adds a nice accent to the bass.
The neck width at the nut is significantly narrower than i remember my old one being. But it's been a long time since i've played it so my recollection is not too clear. However, it still plays amazingly and the finish on the back of the neck is nicely broken in.
The burst finish on this one is absolutely stunning in person! It looks almost 3D with the flamed maple under it.
The sound is leaving a little to be desired (IMO) though. I'm not totally into the EMG pre. It doesn't sound bad, it just doesn't sound great either. I'm most likely going to have it upgraded either to an Audere or Glockenklang pre.
Overall, I'm pleased to be back in the Roscoe family and looking forward to releasing the inner beast caged in this old Roscoe!

A friend of mine just bought an old SKB with the EMG, I took off the control cover, there is plenty of room. The older cavities were completely routed deep, not like they are today just around the pots. Right now, The Perfect Bass has 4 knob Glocks instock, but they only have maybe two left. Your bass only has one 9 volt battery more than likey, but both the Glock and the Audere will work fine. |

Dumb as it sounds I didn't put new strings on it until 2 days after I got it. Needless to say it sounded MUCH better. It's funny, it just never occurred to me to try new strings. I sat twisting knobs on the pre for 2 days going 'what are all these Roscoe fans talking about.' DUH!
Sadly it still was not my cup of tea so I traded it, but it sounded much better and the new owner loves it!

I'll keep you all posted.

I had high expectations for this preamp. The Audere totally blew those expectations away! It's my new favorite pre. Also a surprise was that the body is ash, not spanish cedar like i had guessed. I think I've finally found a keeper!
