Thumbs up Roscoe Love @ New England TB GTG

Hey Boys,
As the title says, this is a report from last Saturday's New England TalkBass GTG in Lincoln, RI. (local YMCA, hence the finger paints and water fountains). First I wish to say the TB'er, AJ Brown, did a fantastic job and the event was loved by all.

I had never been to one, so I was eager and very curious as to what type of gear would be there, quality of basses, effects, food (sheesh, I am a bass player after all), etc...

As I emailed our resident Roscoe Obi-Won, Jerry B.- there were many mid - to- high end basses in attendance; such as:

Avella-Coppola, Elrick, Ernie Ball, Dingwall, Fender, G&L, Kubicki (like 15 of these strange basses), Modulus, Nordstrand, Sadowsky, Valenti, Rob Allen, Roscoe, Zon and a few more I can't recall. You get the gist.

After hearing and later reading the comments on our NE GTG thread, I must say after the Valenti Jazz (Nino was there and very informative, is a cool guy and makes outstanding bass guitars) seen here:

The 2 of the 3 Roscoe basses I brought got the most love - SKB seen here and the Century Standard seen laying down on the job. (* pay no attention to the red and blue bassses that snuck into the photo )

So, big success, fun was had, low notes were many. I even got to meet Roscoe head Fredels and his spry young lads.

We also had a great clinic from Mike Dimin on Solo Bass. Gard, he claims he knows you from back in the Bass Central days. Also, Nino Valenti took a pic of me playing a Valenti Jazz 5 while I was wearing my Roscoe T Shirt and says it can be used as blackmail in the future

Thought you folks would want to hear that many, many of these players with fine tastes were very impressed with the basses from Greensboro, NC.

Cheers,

Pete

^ Indeed, Billy. He could be a serious player in the custom bass NY scene some day I think. He started making basses and has worked for Roger Sadowsky for years I guess. He is open to customizing the preamps, pups, bridge, etc.. in a build. The basses he brought (6) mostly had Sadowsky pre's and pups, however there were some EMG's.

So that is Nino on the right? He has a doppelgänger in David Ayer (writer of Training Day):

Yup, always liked that Nino was open to different pickups, pre's and whatnot.

Cool sounding GTG Pete. Wish I coulda been there to jam with you.

Nino seems like he'd be a cool cat too. Good quality basses at good prices.

You WILL however be riding in the Back of the Roscoe Short Bus with Billy after a Guinness bender for leaving your Century Standard lying down while those "other" basses got stands though.

God Bless, Ray

It's more than that - similar face structure. I've seen plenty of guys sporting the Van-Dyke (fu man chu is no beard - http://www.dyers.org/blog/beards/beard-types/) that don't remind me of Ayer (I know him from some work projects a few years back).

Glad to be of service in the pursuit of the "circle of fur."

Gotcha man, just being a wisenheimer.

And Ray- that bass was on a stand, but at these GTG's some guys will grab a bass to play, or 2 then (gently) place them down where they thought the guitar should be.

But- if Billy does come to Boston he and I will drink enough Sam Adams and Guinness that we may commandeer a short bus for fun.

Yep, My Jazz ended up on a big orange chair at the Georgia GTG. I was just being a wisenheimer too.

Hey there aren't any seatbelts on a short bus. Trust me, I've rolled on a many of short bus floor.

But if you let Billy drive, you'll be able to walk back to where the trip started from the crash site.

God Bless, Ray

Pete, I wish I'd known about that one way in advance, I've been looking for an excuse to hit the extreme NE, and that would have been a good one!

I do know Mike D. from a ways back, he's good people, and a FRIGHTENINGLY good player. I hate him, in a loving way.

Nino is a fantastic guy, and I dig the stuff he does, both the building and the playing.

Looks like a good time was had by all...was Thor (Olafur) there?

Gard, sorry; didn't think you would trek up here for something like that. Good news is we are talking about something in March 2011 and I will keep you informed (* Stlll have pleny of Turbo Dog in the beer fridge).

Mike is a monster player- had some good Jeff Berlin stories , among others. Cool clinic on playing melodically with bass- learned a lot.

Nino is really cool and I can see grabbing one of his basses someday (after I buy my wife a new car or something), I actually preferred his bass over the Sadow$ky

Don't know who Thor is ??

Also- if any of you guys know of other east coast TB GTG keep us posted, one never knows.

Pete C.
