| Look forward to seeing you there, Gard!
Apart from the usual Guinness and a pilsner or two they have a great selection of "proper" beer, or Real Ale, as we call it here.
They always have a selection of Jenning's Ales available. Jennings is a Cumbrian brewery (north west of England, just south of the Scots border) made with the purest water available in England. Cumbria is the "Lake District" - stunning mountain scenery with lakes which remain from the glacial geo-vandalism of the Ice Age. There are always one or two "guest beers" as well but Jennings Best or Jennings Sneck Lifter are the ones to go for. Sneck Lifter will have you comatose after four or five pints if you're not used to it. It's potent.
The Roscoe Head is a tiny little pub with a great atmosphere...
one of the reviewers from that site I posted says... "Been in every Good Beer Guide (for info - the UK beer drinkers' annual bible) since its first publication. Tiny bar area, two tiny rooms, and an even tinier snug. Not the place to go for a private conversation but well worth a visit. It's amazing how it's survived unspoilt all these years, but then why change something which works...Quiet during the day after lunch so good for hangovers. Stay there and create a new one."
I couldn't agree more. It's a great pub. It's at the top of Roscoe Street, which climbs a hill. There used to be another pub simply called the Roscoe at the foot of the hill. That pub is now demolished sadly - but if you have a pub at the foot of Roscoe's hill, then you also need a Roscoe at its' head- hence the name.
I've drunk at, and been drunk in, this pub for almost three decades - it was only a couple of days ago that I saw someone refer to Roscoe Bass fans as Roscoe Heads. I knew I had to post this up...
cheers, (literally)
Scoop.
