Roscoe Sound Clips

JOE HAS REQUESTED THAT I POST THIS HERE, SO WITHOUT FURTHER ADO:

I’ve had some issues with my file server so I had to move all of my sound clips to another server. Unfortunately I’m unable to edit most of my old links (in this Thread).

If you want to listen to any of the sound clips with broken links, just click on the link below. I uploaded all of the songs. Just click on the one that you want to hear.

JOME77 SONGS

We have so many players ask how various Roscoe's configured with different wood combinations, preamps, pickups and strings sound, that I thought it might be a good idea to build a library of sound clips from different Roscoe's.

Personally, I think that you can tell more about the sound of the bass if the bass is soloed with the EQ set flat, and played various styles.

Before I swapped out the Audere preamp with a Demeter, I recorded my new Roscoe so I could reference the sound before the Demeter installation to the sound of the bass with the Demeter installed. I basically just turned the recorder on and played a few different style licks (from various songs) using a pick, finger style and slap.

The bass is configured as follows:

LG3005 w/straight p/u’s
Exhibition burl maple top
Spanish Cedar body
Exhibition Cocobolo finger board
Bart CB p/u’s
Audere pre
Diamondwood nut

The strings are the Roscoe gauged D'Addario nickels.

Here's a link that Vroomvroom modified for me. I knew that Jerry could figure it out!!!

Spanish Cedar w_Audere pre Bart CBs

Joe, the bass sounds terrific - great playing!

If it helps, here's a tip on embedding the link. If you use [ url=xyz ] and [ /url ] (without the spaces inside the brackets) you can include the actual URL after the = sign. Then, if you'd like, you can also add some text in between the sets of brackets. The result?

Joe's bad self playing his LG

Thanks guys. I guess that means that the link works.

I'm going to borrow my buddies Tascam 4 track again and make some clips of the same bass with the Demeter pre and some DR Black Beauties. I think that you'll be surprised how different it sounds.
I'm also going to make a few with some local players Roscoe's with ash and myrtle bodies and various preamps.

Maybe as folks post the sound clips we can organize them in a manner that people can find the various combos easily.

Vroomvroom (Jerry) suggest maybe a Roscoe Facebook page. We'll start here though and see if develops into anything useful.
Personally, I think it might be great to access them from the Roscoe Web site.

Oh Gard.....Oh Clint...(thy Webmaster sir)...........

Just a random thought here, hopefully not muddying the waters....

As much as I agree with Joe - set the EQ flat (bass and amp/input) and have at it - for me the real value comes in hearing an instrument in a live setting. I've learned the hard way (not with any of my Roscoes, of course) that there are some instruments that sound amazing in a solo setting, but simply don't cut through the mix in a group setting. So, perhaps in a separate category, we could also share those types of recordings?

All that said, I do dig the concept, so here's my little addition.

SKB 3006 #5520

Ash body
Burl Myrtle top
Spalted Purpleheart fingerboard
Bartolini electronics
MTD SS strings

Genz Benz Shuttle 6.0-12T, all flat/centered, except for pre-gain @ 6/10.

Fertile Myrtle solo sample

SKB 3006 FL #5907

Ash body
Burl Maple top
Ebony fingerboard
Bartolini electronics
MTD SS strings

Genz Benz Shuttle 6.0-12T, all flat/centered, except for pre-gain @ 6/10.

Mighty Maple solo sample

Nice tone and chops Jerry!

You're not helping my GAS for a Roscoe fretless at all!

I don't think that you're muddying up the waters at all. I think that there's lot's of value of clips of Roscoe in gigging situations. I love listening to those. The only problem that I have with them is that often the sound of the Roscoe isn't really as clear and it's sound is often greatly influenced or altered by the other instruments.
Solo clips IMO really allow you to hear the tone of instrument (woods and electronics). Some of that often gets lost in the live mix.

Are you wanting to host the files on the Roscoe site or just put a link on the Roscoe site to where ever you are currently hosting the files?

I think Roscoe on Facebook would be good. You can never have enough exposure for Roscoe Guitars, though it would be best to send everyone to the Roscoe site for getting the links to the audio clips.

Very Cool Ryan!

So are you close to closing a deal on a Roscoe?

It wouldn't be that killer quilt topped 3006 with a wenge fb would it?

That one would definitely be a nice one to re-enter the ranks of Roscoe ownership with!

Yes, this is only wise but feel free to bash away once you've received your bass.

Hmm, here are my not-so-exciting contributions.

LG-3005 #5550 w/ angled pickups
Exhibition Quilt Maple top
Spanish Cedar body
Bartolini preamp & pickups
Spalted Purpleheart fingerboard
Graphite nut

Strings: Elixir Super Light .040-.095 w/ .125 B

Signal Path: bass -> Radial JDI -> EDIROL UA-25EX -> Logic Express w/ crappy drum loops

Clip 1: Fingerstyle - p/u @ mid-pan, EQ flat

Clip 2: Slap/Pop - p/u @ mid-pan, EQ flat

Clip 3: "Precision" - p/u @ 100% neck, EQ 5/10 low, 7/10 mid 250Hz, 3/10 high

Clip 4: A Few Chords - p/u @ 100% bridge, EQ 6/10 low, 6/10 mid 800Hz, 4/10 high

Sorry, my slapping and chord technique is weaksauce, but it's enough to get the idea. Strings are relatively new, but honestly, a set of dead Elixirs still sound like that. Not as zingy as stainless steel, but always consistent tone. (And my hands sweat a lot.)

I thought about mic'ing my MarkBass/Epifani rig, but I figured that would be too many variables thrown into the equation.

Thumbs up

Very nice Dave! I really like the tone on the fingerstyle. The drum machine in the back ground adds to the clip too, without taking away the true sound of the bass. I guess that I should enter the 21st century, get one and learn to use it!

I'm going to record my Roscoe with the Demeter pre/Bart CB's this weekend, and hopefully, also a Spanish cedar w/purpleheart FB and Bart/Bart combo.
