If I can offer any assistance, just let me know. I'm anxious for your quarantine to be over (my bday is in late August too, so I can relate).
Okay, so last night the Mrs. was off at a girls-night shindig, watching the Bachelorette. Which means Roscoe the dog and I were bachelors. In turn...the Roscoes got played. I'd been meaning to do some direct 'baseline' recording for awhile, and last night was the perfect opportunity. So...
Parameters:
Bass > Radial JDI > M-Audio Fastrack USB > Stinkpad Laptop via 'Session' software. Files exported to .wav within the application, and then normalized and converted to .mp3 within Audacity.
Each instrument was EQ'd completely flat, with the blend pot centered. Volume was set as close to 'max' as possible, monitoring the 'peak' light on the M-Audio interface to only appear during aggressive slapping. Batteries (Duracell) and strings (MTD stainless) are relatively fresh. The results? Roscoe 5520
SKB 3006: Ash/myrtle, Standard/spalted purpleheart, Bart/Bart. Roscoe 5705
SKB 3006: Ash/maple, Wenge wedge/maple, Nord DC/Aggie OBP-3.
I'll hold off on sharing my thoughts until hearing some of yourn... |

my recorder is a Boss BR1600 (12 tracks recorder) and it can indeed export in wave file.
So I suppose your more recent one will do it too.
A bit of work to figure how everything work but once you do, it is quite cool.

The Nords do sound a bit better slapped, to be honest.
While they do sound different, they sound a lot closer to each other than I imagined, a skilled player, I assume is causing that though.
Truthfully, I'm completly at a loss as to which I prefer overall.
So far, I've only listened through my laptops speakers, I'll try later with a decent set of cans.

I'm surprised at how close the 2 basses sound in overall tone. I would have suspected that the Nord/Aggie would have been much brighter and open sounding but the Bart/Bart combo really hangs with it in that area. Maybe it's the ash bodies that I'm hearing....... or maybe "it's the hands" ! |

| | Cogito Ergo Idiot | | Join Date: Jan 2007 Location: SF Bay Area, CA | | Thanks, fellas. Now, here's the interesting thing...and why I whined (wah! wah!) earlier in this thread about the overall value of these types of recordings. In a live mix, the slap tone from the myrtle/Bart-Bart bass just doesn't cut through. The maple/wedge/Nord/Aggie does better, but nowhere close to the other instruments in the fleet. Not an indictment by any means - it's not like I get hired to slap - just an observation. Similarly, in a live setting the Nord/wedge bass is quite a bit more open sounding than the myrtle/Bart beast, with very crisp highs and downright mean and nasty lows & lower mids. On the other hand, the myrtle one just, to my ears, totally exemplifies the Roscoe sound, especially with that lower mid punch!
Off-topic, but for comparison purposes, here are a couple of my other instruments... Lakland Joe Osborn MTD 635
One of my gigs this week is an outdoor corporate thing, and I'll be taking the Nord/wedge bass. The setup should allow for a good quality recording, and if so I'll definitely share some samples. |

Both usable tones but I dug the 5705 in the solo setting.
Listened to the JO and the MTD and I still prefer 5705 over those as well.
Looking forward to hearing the corperate gig clips.
EDIT; Jerry, Just visited your site. For some reason all pics are red X's. AND You have a disproportionate Roscoe to OTR bass ratio on your calendar. EXPLAIN YOURSELF!!
God Bless, Ray

It instantly became my go-to as soon as my man Tony was kind enough to sell it to me. I'm anxious to hear it in an environment where (hopefully) I can turn it up a bit. |

I was expecting much more hi-fi from that one and yet it sounds so much similar to the Bart/Bart setup. I also cannot believe those are stainless strings as they are not zingy sounding at all. |

The Nord/Aggie bass speaks more aggressively for sure, but to my ears it's still easily identifiable as a Roscoe. I am just knocked out by it.
Ray, guilty as charged - I've been really bad about keeping my website up-to-date. I'm doing so many corporate/wedding/private party gigs these days that it didn't make much sense to try very hard...doh! Nonetheless, there shouldn't be any red X's, though - I just verified all the links and everything shows up fine. Sorry for any inconvenience there. |

I will vouch for you on the grounds of "working" all your gigs though .
the red x thing may be my ISP. They've been quite crappy the last few days. No inconveinience bro, I'm just busting your stones.
All In Good Fun
I'll check your site periodically and see if I get the pics to show. When I see the pics I'll PM you.

great clips.
However I'm a bit surprised that those two config sound so similar to my ears. Could it be possible that one of the element of the recording chain (M-audio or mp3 encoding) colours the tone so that they both come out quite similar ?
I hear some compression on and a kind of fatness on all the clips including JO 5 and MTD.
Anyway, playing is great and reminds me all those great bass line from M. Jacksons years of glory.

There is a lot of common ground on all of the instruments - including my Mike Lull with those vintage single coils. I've got to think that whatever is happening occurs at the software level. The .wav files sound very similar to the .mp3 files, so I don't think anything is happening after-the-fact. FWIW, I did make sure that the track was set to record with no effects. |

But thanks... I think.
Now I want to buy an an MTD. |

No A/C (not to go way off-topic, especially in the Roscoe forum, but along with Pink Floyd, grapefruit, and the Grateful Dead, I just don't get A/C basses. The ones I've played just haven't done anything for me). That said, FWIW, here's my Lull...between it and the Lakland I have all the Fender Jazz mojo I've ever wanted. Mike Lull MV5
The right MTD - much more rare than the right Roscoe - is definitely something to behold. |

i really dig the 5520 sound, it has that low-mids and slight compression in the upper mids and highs that i just really like to hear lately
the 5705 sound is more open, more definition and 'weight' to the highs, and honestly, imo, really suits your playing well
from the samples i've heard, you play very cleanly with commitment to every note, much like my instructor who comes from a brazilian jazz background--you guys have such a great touch with your technique that the more open sound really speaks and compliments your playing very well
...this being said, there is still a lot of similarity between the 2 and both sound great in the clips

Okay, here's some live action with #5705. Awesome gig yesterday...picnic for the Micro$oft research team, literally held in their back yard - a very cool open area behind their gorgeous facility. Gourmet catered food, really nice folks, beautiful weather, and orders from the band leader to, "open it up and play whatever we want." Bada boom.
Strange thing...as I tuned up, I coudn't really find a happy tone. I had my Epi 502 &UL310-2, so this was a huge surprise. Everything was there, but it was sterile and very solid-state-ish. I played with the knobs for a bit, and then on a whim, I flipped the humbucker/single coil switch up to the SC position. Shazaam! First time I've liked the tone with the switch in this position. I can only guess it was the environment - wide open area in front of me, with the cab literally on the ground...
On to the clips. Fair warning: there are some slap solos going on here. Yep, you read that right...along with the tonal shock to the system, I discovered that this thing has some bark to it. Woo hoo! Forgive the playing, but by all means, dig the tone. These clips are a bit longer than usual - ~ 3 - 4 MB - but I wanted to share with you the amazing players I'm lucky to work with on occasion. There was a lot more exploration going on, and if you happen to be interested in the full versions of these tunes, just let me know. Funky Blues Homage to Joe Z. Duke Goes to 'Nawlins Three Blues |

EXCUSE THE PLAYING! HA!
Excuse me while I go
Great stuff man.

Quick question though, how did you record them? And if you used a handheld recorder where did you place it so that all the instruments sounded so even?
