I have owned both and I thought I would give my two cents to whoever cares.

Mtd 535: Korina body, Wenge neck and fb
Great feel. String spacing is really comfortable narrower at the nut wider at the bridge. Reallly light. The finish on the Wenge neck made it much smoother than wenge neck basses I have owned. This bass had incredible slap tone which is why I got it. The pickups were Bart but inside the ciols were split single. It was incredibly responsive, and mellow with a low end so strong you had to cut lows.

Roscoe skb 3006- The feel on this bass is ideal for me. the neck depth is less than the MTD but not paper-thin to the point your hand cramps. The neck on this one is every bit as fast as Fodera IMO. The barts on this are dual coil so it's much more "modern" or "High-Fi". The best way I can describe it is -Smith tone and Fodera Feel. It is a better fit for me.
It's spanish cedar and weighs 11 lbs. So the weight is my only issue.

I prefer the high fi tone for finger style which I do the most. But when I slap I like the marcus miller type of sound which the MTD did nicelly.

Just because they both have Barts doesn't mean anything. Its a black box and anything could be inside there.

Well I've had a bit more experience with another MTD over the past month so I thought that I'd add another 2 cents worth.
The spec's of the MTD 635 I picked was as follows:

Tulipwood body
burled maple top
maple one piece neck
madagascar rosewood finger board
Bart p/u's
Bart pre

This was a much warmer instrument than the wenge/wenge neck/FB 535 that I previously owned. It still had that clear MTD tone but not nearly as harsh sounding. You could actually turn down the treble and the tone really smoothed out.
The workmanship was really good and the action on this bass was as low without fret buzz as I've seen.
I really liked the 3-position switch for the mid's (250/500/1000) and the MTD Bart system really had a nice sound.

The bass almost swayed me into keeping it but in the end I was contacted my one of the previous owners, got weak and sold it back to him (I'm such a nice guy! ).

I sold it just in time to pickup Sonny/radmin/Sonny's SKB 3006 (don't feel sorry for this bass having been passed around a bit in it's early life. It's found a permanent home!!! ).
Having just finshed a gig with it this morning I also got chance to really compare the sound and playabiltiy of both instruments (while the MTD was still fresh in my head; also both also had a fresh set of Roscoe D'addario nickle strings installed).

The Roscoe 3006 setup with equally awesome action. Lowest that I've ever been able to get on a Roscoe without buzz (yeah I shimmed it. So what? ). Playability wasn't significantly different although it felt like the MTD might utilize a larger radius (resulting in a slightly flatter feeling FB). Both really felt good playing finger style and with a pick.
The tone on the other hand is significantly different. Even though this MTD was much warmer sounding than the previous wenge/wenge, it still had a very clear bright tone. The Roscoe is so much thicker sounding. I really liked the tone of the MTD in the lower register but in the upper register the MTD could get a bit thin sounding. Quite frankly, it wasn't until I played the Roscoe 3006 this morning that this really hit home. We played some tunes this morning that had quite a few licks above the 12th fret and the Roscoe really just sounded so thick. The sound man came up after the sound check this morning and commented on the phatness of the bass tone.

I think that it was XavidmanX that mentioned in a thread that he was surprised when I picked up the MTD 635. He said that if I got cut I'd probably bled Roscoe. I guess that he was right...

All in all I'd say while the MTD was sure a nice sounding and playing instrument, so is the Roscoe. And the bottom line is that I just like a thicker sounding tone.

As for me and my house, we play Roscoes!

Nicely quoted...book of 1st Bass I believe? Again, it's interesting to hear the comparisons as I was really close to buying a MTD 535. I can't help but be swayed by Norm Stockton's tone but he could make a Fisher Price sound good.

It's kind of funny...I asked him one time if he had tried the Phil Jones amps yet. I feel like they don't really color the tone like a lot of amps...anyway, he said he tried one once but had little to say about it. That's fine as I know you need to honor your sponsor and clearly he's still happy with them. I think Norm is real happy with MTD.

Nice review Joe - you are right about that "thick" tone inherant with the Roscoe/Bart Pups. I do find, personally, that I need a bit more top and end up winding up the top on the eq quite a bit. I am hoping to keep some of that tone but with more brightness with the Nordys.

Nice bass by the way

Poptart, you will have the best of both worlds.

When I talked to Gardfather about the specs on my most recent build, I told him that I wanted the Phatness of Roscoe, with the more open highs of an MTD.

Ta Daaaahhhh!!! The Demeter with Nordstrand pickups was the ticket.

It is the sound that I have had in my head for a long time.

I love this bass. The wenge neck certainly makes you clean up your technique, but With the ability to warm it up with the preamp, I get thunder and lightning from this lovely thing.

Joel - yours is a tremendous bass, very much what I would have spec'd for myself. I am hoping for similar results with the Audere and DCs, eg super clean/modern, but with that nice round bottom end

That's what I'm expecting as well. I have an Audere 3 band in another bass now, but it sounds like the Roscoe tuned 3ZB/R is much improved in terms of the fixed Z modes and increased headroom on Treble/Bass. I'm very excited!
