Roscoeheads! What strings you smackin?

Just as the title says, I wanna hear what strings are on all of your beautiful Roscoes!

Me, I have Roto Swing 66's on mine, good agressive tone, not too happy about them being steels, and freteaters, but they were all I could get locally, and I'll be ordering something new this week, Optima Golds, hopefully.

I've always liked Roto's but they just don't last long enough. I use DR Nickel Lo Rider custom 6's or SIT Power Steel stainless. I've no complaints with either.

D'Addario XL Nickels. I've tried many others but these just seem to sound and feel best on my Roscoe.

I tried Rotosounds RS66LB (which I love using on my EBMM SR5 HH) on my LG3005, but the gage was just too light to cut it on the wenge neck. I like Dunlop Stainless Steel Lights- very bright and slinky but strong enough for the Roscoe. I think Rotosound SM665 would be good too (very similar gages vs the Dunloap lights).

Elixir .45-.105+.125B. They're the only strings that last longer than a few sweaty hours, maintaining a "broken in" sound (no more zing) for months. They keep a warm, round midrange for ages.

I typically kill sets of regular strings (e.g. Slinkys, R.Coccos, DRs) in a few days...

I've recently been thinking of going even lighter, but the .125 B is the thinnest Elixir makes. I figure a .40-.95 set would feel weird next to a .125 B.

R.Cocco nickels are doin' the trick for me. My friend that plays constantly had me get him some R. Cocco stainless and he digs them and says they last as long as his previous favorites.

I have to order my strings as well.

Fantastic Tomastic

I prefer the sound of flatwounds, so I go with TI Jazz flats. I would like to try the DR flats. Anyone used them before want to tell me what you thought of the soud you can get with them.

I'm still pretty much addicted to the MTD's w/ the .135 'B'. Bright and durable...

Usually DR roundwounds (LowBeams), but just picked up a pack of flat Chromes to try out. Love flats on my fretless bass.

I like DR's Sunbeams (nickel rounds with round cores). Their flexibility, durability, and warmth have made me a loyal DR customer.

SIT Power Wound Nickels for me, .045-.130. They're a custom set, just 'cause I prefer a .130 to a .125 on the B. The stock set is .045 to .125.

Being new to 35" scale, I'm thinking of dropping down to a set of .040s on my next string change... just to try it.

(Puts Karnac The Magnificent turban on)

...I'm getting an impression....lefty LG 3005....swamp ash body....transparent white finish.....pau ferro fingerboard....will be done by June....

...the question has been in a hermetically sealed envelope on Funk & Wagnall's front porch...

Yes, this bass, this one will NEED the BB's, we may need to acquire a set for it from day one....hmm...yes....

(Takes off Karnac The Magnificent turban)

Hmmm, whats the tension on Black Beauties like, compared to Lowriders, and Roto S66's?

I've been interested in trying a set of them too.

Optima only have a .125 B, I'm used to heavier, and I don't know what the tension will be like, they're high tension on the 4 string sets, but the B might not be high enough.

FYI - I stock the Black Beauties, but they're not yet listed on my site. If you want to try a set, just drop me a PM and I can get ya hooked up.

I just put a set on a used Warwick that I sold recently, and they were pretty cool strings. So I asked DR about them this morning, and they said they are essentially DR Hi-Beams with a coating on them. I was hoping he'd say they did the black coating in nickel, too, but no go.

DR Lowriders 45-130. I will try Black Beauties eventually though. $100 is alot for a set of strings.

Nah, man, they're way less than that. $33 for a 4-string set, $43 for 5-string, $46 for 6-string. They're a little more expensive that HiBeams/LoRiders, but not a ton more...
