Thanks Gard!

I was over in the Strings section, jus poking around and I found a thread regarding Black Beauties. Now, I have read in this forum, multiple times about the level of admiration my fellow Roascoe Heads have for these strings, so I decided to pick up a set and see for my self, what all the giffuffal was about.
Man, I wish I have listened to you guys (Gard) four or five sets of string ago!
Thanks for the suggestion... I really like 'em!
I gotta get an updated pic of my LG to post up here, cause she now looks like a bride on her wedding day - dead sexy and glamorous at the same time!

Thanks folks!

Joe, glad you like 'em.

They're definitely not for everyone, but man, I am so happy with them, and have been for about 7-8 years now!

I have to admit my growing love of these too. They're on two of my Roscoes now, and will probably end up on my LG3006 before too long.

They're pretty awesome strings indeed.

Though, they're not so fun if you do a lot of slides, especially big or fast ones.

I have noticed that they are a little "rougher" then the nickels I have been playing, but not an issue for me to date.
A few of the songs my band plays have me sliding up and down the neck, no ill affect yet. I will say however, after a three hour rehearsal on Firday night, my fingers were a little sensitive on Saturday morning. Nothing that time won't take care of.

How are these on a fretless? Would the coating mark my diamond wood board?

How much 'rougher' are they really on the slides. I had heard the coatin actually made them smoother... Feedback here seems to contradict this.

If anything I'd imagine the coating would help protect a fretless board.

It wasn't that they were rough to me, but there's a lot of friction on them, like running your finger along a carpet or cloth too fast.

I don't get that "hard on the fingers" thing at all...they feel nice and smooth to me, but then again, I came to them from stainless steel strings, so...as for fretless:

...they're the only strings that have ever been on that bass.

I have steels one a few basses(including my LG), but never get that burning sensation if I slide a lot on them.

Steels don't like my fingers so I always like nickel. I was told that the coatin has a nickel-like feeling under the finger... I think they'll look awesome on my Roscoes as well...

Same here, but the BB's are great. Had a first rehearsal last weekend with a (primarily) jazz band. 6 hours and a little touchiness on the finger tips, but I had taken a year off without playing with anyone.

And, they do look great too!

Hey Jim, how are you? Did this bass have the BB's on it when I played it last Feb? I played Gard's fretless days later and his fretless is heaven on earth- it had the Black Beauties and they felt great. I had them on my black Century Standard (fretted) and didn't like the feel. I may reconsider for my Roscoe Cen Standard fretless.......(just more ways to earn my hard earned money I guess ).

Do you string aficionados think perhaps I had a bad set of BB's? They felt awful when sliding up and down the neck and did wear out from fret wear which looked unpleasant. I really like the DR Sunbeams on my Roscoe fretless Century but am always willing to try new things......

Hey Pete, doing great here - How's things up North?

Yeah, the BB's were on when you were here. They absolutely feel different than regular nickles but fairly easy to get used to. Haven't experienced any wear from frets.

OT - Boston 4: Vancouver 0, first period.

DR has changed their coating recently, the K3 coating is their latest. I'm sure the wear factor has been improved.

The strings feel a bit tacky right out of the box, but that fades pretty quickly (2-3 days?).

Agreed on the feel of the new sets, you need to play 'em a few days before they start to not feel "weird". I haven't had a set of the newer ones, my sets are both well over a year old right now.

Oh, and Jim - - I'd forgotten how incredible that bass looked. Lucky dude...

Yup, they said the new coating lasts far, far longer.

If that's the case, I may never need to buy strings again - my old BB's are fine, and both sets are well over a year old now. If the new stuff lasts longer...

...they may put themselves out of business!!!

...FWIW, keep in mind I've still got the original strings on my NS Design CR5M from 2001!

I've never had a problem with old strings really, even teh strings on my LG must be the wrong side of a year, and they're steel rounds.

My DR coated ones still sound exactly the same as the day I put them on, but I haven't been abusing that bass, and they started to chip on the G string already, which honestly doesn't really matter. Would love to try the K3's.

Ryan, our electronics tech/utility outfielder put some BB's on his guitar, had the same issue. Must have been a bad batch in there somewhere???
