Tone

I guess this would be for Gard but anybody with advice would be helpful. I need advice on what tonewood combinations would get what I'm looking for.I got with Paul, the sound engineer with the studio I spend time with and he said that I get the gig because the sound is "warm, clear, with articulation and it makes his job easy with the mix". If anyone has listened to Bela Fleck and the Flecktones, the song," Big Country" that is the tone that I try to get too. A tight round bottom with a clear top.I like the looks but I have to put tone at the top so anybody that can give advice it would be helpful. Oh, by the way, I go right to the board at the studio and through a Mesa M Pulse 600 when we play out. Tim.

I would do ash or spanish cedar body, rosewood fingerboard, Bart pickups and electronics.

Just my .02

I'm not familar with the Bela Fleck tune but my daughter did just get a new dog that she named Bella so I'll take a stab at this question......

As any Roscoehead that's been around this forum long knows, I've always been a big fan of the Spanish cedar body Roscoe's. They have a nice phat low end with lots of warmth. I've owned 7 Spanish cedar Roscoe's with various tops, FB's and electronics and they all sounded good. But I'm not sure that I'd describe them as having a "tight round bottom with a clear top". Of course all of them had the Bart p/u's.
IMO if you added the Nord p/u's and an Aguilar OBP-3 (or maybe the Audere but I've yet to hear the Roscoe version) I think that you'd come closer a "tight round bottom with a clear top".
Also maybe add a nice maple top and maple FB to enhance the highs.

Of course my favorite Roscoe now is an ash body/maple top with a wenge wedge neck w/maple FB and the Nord p/u's w/Aggie OBP-3 pre. By far the clearest and most versatile sounding Roscoe that I've owned.

Man I love that bass!

Good luck!

As a side note, I played through a Mesa M-Pulse 600 and a Mesa Wallkbout for a couple of years. Great amps but I can't really imagine getting a "tight round bottom with a clear top" from a Mesa.
Huge and warm with somewhat subtle highs are more characteristic of those amps.

Your'e right about warm, I have gotten a nice tight attack with my fingertips and a little mid.Maybe clear is not a good word, but I know what I mean.Anyway, I'm watching the new Crossroads concert (2007) and the bass player with Jeff Beck is OUTSTANDING.The bass is bigger then she is.
