OK, I got a chance to get out of Greensboro for a weekend retreat in lovely Asheville, thanks to our good friend Wolfbass, aka Jake. First of all, he's a SMOKIN' player, got to see him with his world music/modern flamenco quartet Cabo Verde Friday night and they were just killin'. He's also just a great guy, opened his home to me, and we got to sit around and play with his insane pile of cool gear and basses.
Best of all, we reunited the twins!
Here they are in all their glory:

1) It's actually EASIER to play a 6 than a 4 or a 5, once you get used to it (less jumping around, everything is in one place).
2) If a hack like me can play one convincingly, ANYONE can. (Jake on the other hand makes any bass sound impressive...)
Joe, yes, I really needed that break, badly. Jake is a savior, my blood pressure dropped at least 20 points over the weekend - good music, good company, and excellent food (particularly the sushi Saturday night).

Just don't tell Joe, hmmkay?
(Interesting aside: Jake used to have a job with Zon similar to mine here at Roscoe! That's how we know each other, from back in my Bass Central days.)

(now I know what you're thinking.. one bedroom? Gard was on the couch FYI ) I must be a true musician, living in a drafty old shack but stacked to the gill with top shelf bass gear... Priorities, check!
I took Gards fretless to my gig friday night, and his fretted to my gig saturday night.... At the end of the day, there are just too many nice options out there. I find myself saying "I like x characteristic of this bass, and the y of that bass and the z of that bass". His fretted really grew on me though, what a killer bass. Makes me rethink my BN6 a little... just a little though Definitely became clear that when I order another roscoe, it will have 19mm (3/4") spacing.
Playing his fretless was really a revelation to me. They really are very different, mine and his. Just goes to show how two basses spec'd out essentially the same can have such variation. I really fell back in love with my fretless this weekend, not that I ever disliked it, but it became clear again how great it is. It really plays beautifully and its upper mid presence just plain works in a mix. Its still on the trading block for the right AC6, but, being that that's kind of a longshot, I'm not bummed in the least to keep it in the stable.
Thanks for the good times Gard, I was more than glad to host, and yeah that Sushi was da bomb!

I still think we can tweak your fretless just a little bit and get that last little bit you're looking for out of it. On the fretted stuff, yeah, I love your BN6, but my opinion mirrors yours on the topic - I'm totally in love with my fretted bass, it RULES! Also, we have an odd-ball body sitting here and can't really do much with it, so I've kinda claimed it for my new "project" we talked about - it's not going to be exactly what I said, and I'm keeping it to myself until it actually starts happening, but it will be cool!
Again, thanks bro! Quote:

My new son-in law traveled a lot with the baseball team and they had to bunk up quite often while on the road. He told me that they had one firm rule: "Hole to hole or pole to pole!"

Three words on those basses. DEE LISH OUS. Or something. Just wow...beautimous! This was a fun thread - thanks, everyone! |
