... yet. Heh heh. My Jedi Mind Tricks, general hypnosis, and barrage of subliminal messages will continue until victory is mine! Bwahahaha.
But I digress...
...
...
Folks, I present to you the newest member of our family, Roscoe.
We rescued/adopted him last Friday. He's a shepherd mix, with what is suspected to be some chow in there. Basically, he's my kind of dog - a mutt. The best guess so far is that he'll be between 50 - 70 lbs. Roscoe was #1 on my list of possible names, but I wanted the Mrs. to really decide if that worked. Also up for consideration was Jaco, Mingus, Marcus, Dexter, and Gard. Okay, maybe I kid about the last one. We're loving him, he's really well-behaved, and so far it's all good with the cats. |

I like the name, too. People would look at you funny at the dog park if you were running after him hollering "SADOWSKY! SADOWSKY!" And if you named him 'Gard,' God only knows what might come straggling your way when you hollered that name.

Quick sappy BG. which will hopefully explain why I'm so giddy over this. In 2003 we adopted Joey Ponch. (Cliff Notes on the name. He was seven when we got him, and his name was Ponch. I could not bear the idea of thinking of Erik Estrada every time I called my dog. While moaning about this, I learned that Joey 'Pants' Pantoliano was going to be on the Sopranos. Pants...Ponch...close enough. Bada boom.)
After a long and brave fight with cancer, we lost him just over a year ago. (If you're an animal lover wanting an excuse to cry, feel free to read this.) I'm a self-confessed sap, and am honestly still not over losing him. In the interim, we've rescued a number of cats, and as much as I'd like to blame my wife, I'm just as responsible for the fact that we've kept more than we've adopted out. So, even though the urge for a new dog was there, we really had to be careful. As much as we wanted to support the Humane Society again, the sad truth is that just about every dog they're taking in is a Pit Bull. And as much as I love 'em, they're a no-go for a cat-friendly house. The more Kim became familiar with these folks, the more we liked them. Two weeks ago we met the litter, and Friday Kim picked up the pup-to-be-named-later...while I was setting up for a gig, no less. And now you know the rest of the story....sorry for the length. |

I had a Chow/Shepard mix that I rescued as a pup in the Tejas Hill Country. Ranxerox was the best friend I've ever had. He went everywhere with me. Sadly, he got into some poison someone had set out on they're ranch and my best friend was gone. If you have children then you're in for a treat. My kids and Ranx bonded so tightly that they still shed a tear when they see his pictures. |

P.S. He may wind up to be a "Gard" dog yet.

I love my critters - Miss Doris the hounddeer and my other faithful companion, Vivianne. She and I met back in 2001 in my garage when I heard a tiny but persistent "mew...mew...mew" coming from the back corner. I was going through a nasty divorce from a wife whose addictions were killing her, and 'Vivi' was newborn and had evidently been abandoned by her feral mom. She still had her umbilical cord stub.
I figure God, or the Universe, or whatever force regulates us, put us together that night and said "You two are in tough shape. Take care of each other." I bottle-fed her and against all odds, we both made it through somehow. She's the coolest cat ever. Not being around other cats, she learned most of Doris' behavior - including howling and growling at strangers and giving lots of kisses. The picture was taken by a neighbor the night we met. I do have some large paws that serve as hands, but that's still one tiny cat. She's made up for lost ground, though; she's a 14-pound carpet shark now.
Dave

She has some of the strongest herding instincts I have seen. Nips the heels and gets her head just in front of you when you are walking and tries to push you into the wall.

Clint, Madison is gorgeous! I love her - what a great face! She is too cool for school. |

3 years ago my wife and I found a one week old kitten in the parking lot at Newark airport. Cold, rainy October night. Cold little abandoned kitten. We took him home and to the vet the next morning. He was .3 lb and barely alive. The vet said "He may not make it, but if he does your going to get quite attached." Was that the biggest understatement ever. 3 years later he's doing great and I'm so attached to him I can't even explain it. No pics on my work computer, I'll try and get some up later. |

My girlfriend has a Bearded Collie, and being around him I've witnessed the herding instinct first hand; it's really fascinating. At about 9 PM every night he starts trying to herd us up to bed, and he's really adamant about it. We're not a perfectly obedient "flock" so he gets more and more urgent until we finally follow his instructions.
VJP, big props to a fellow kitty rescuer. That someone would abandon a one week old kitten in a cold airport parking lot is unfathomable to me. Bless you for turning the situation around, and I know exactly what you mean about the amazing mutual level of attachment.
This forum's got some big hearts in it. It must be all the warmth pumped into them through the backs of our Roscoes. And to think we get that feature for no extra charge - it's a wonderful thing.
