But of course, that's all guesswork, heh, Gard'll pop along and tell you the right answer.

Sometimes the strings and other gear you use can help others figure out what your tonal goals are. Do you use flats or roundwounds? Clear & crisp, or warm & tubey? Fingerstyle, pick, or slap?
Are you playing funk, blues, rock, punk, metal, stoner, R&B, jazz? |

i'm talking about low mis growl, i'll try to find a clip tomorrow
I mostly Play with my fingers.
I use fenders pure nickels string on m'y jazzbass
these string brings that low mid growl that i like.
I'd prefer a round but a bit more modern tone.
I use 12" and 15" speakers, i don't like 10's, i l'île warmoth and round tone but i need a bass with a slight Edgy tone to keep some définition through my cabs
i hope it helps

Also check out Rocket Music's website. They have clips posted for a lot of their Roscoes in stock.
Good Luck. |

IMO the Roscoe 5 bangers tend to have more growl than the 4...perhaps its the longer scale. The CB's are a bit more aggressive than the standard barts...Ive read they are more J like whereas the standards are P like in nature.

...best reply I can give you is to call the shop when you have a few minutes, and we will chat about it. Once I have an idea of YOUR "growly", it'll be much easier to make a correct suggestion.

I'm so proud of the progress that you've made in the land of Roscoe! Good to see that you've figured out what's really important on a Roscoe!
All Roscoe's growl to some degree Bassman. IMO the secret to the Roscoe growl lies in the overall neck construction and in the body wood.
Spanish cedar = smoother tone with more emphasis on lower mids
ash = more aggressive tone with more emphasis on upper mids
maple & alder = somewhere in between the Spanish cedar and ash (leaning a bit more toward the ash though).
Gard will lead you in the right direction but a word of warning:
He loves 2 things in this world: The Saints & ASH!
Take 'em both with a grain of salt! |

God Bless, Ray

same "growl" as I do.. kind of growl in the low mids..
it's not hard with my Bartolini/ Aguilar combo.. Mine is ash/ cocobolo fb, maple top... DR loriders or sunbeams,
pretty much,
I don't try anything special, the bass lends itself towards a modern yet warm tone. The lo mids are pure and very aggressive if u dig in, don't worry, it's growls for me,
Bigtime..!
I also agree, stay with a classic Bart/aggie combo to be safe IMO.

I thought it was just that special one, the SP-3, or whathaveyou...
I have an MMSR sitting in a box, I hummed and hawed about trying, but I'd have to wire in a blend, and it's pretty dark sounding, which might work against the Roscoe Barts.
