Bass teacher in Jacksonville, Florida?

Sign in to disble this ad
Well, now that I've got a free day in my schedule, I'd like to take lessons. Most people who teach in Jacksonville though are mainly guitarists who occasionally play bass. I'd like to be able to find a teacher who is a bassist foremost, and be able to learn theory and proper techniques. The whole works basically.

There are several noteworthy players around. I just bought a Berg 322 from Mark David. He's no poseur for sure. He's playing at the Sundog Cafe tonight. You could ask him.

I think Andy King still teaches.

Barry Dunaway teaches out of St. Augustine and he's, well, he's Barry Dunaway.

Hey RandomEvent,

I'm Mark David. I want to invite you out to The Brix @ Jax Beach tonight to check out our band, "Yankee Slickers". Very good band, I'm sure you'll enjoy it. We'll also be at Fast Boy Wings Pierside for New Years Eve.

For a bass instructor I suggest you get in touch with Ernie Allum @ Nice Music in Orange Park. He's a very good instructor and you can tell him I told you to call him.

If you make it out to hear us please come up to me and introduce yourself. Good luck!

Sweet, thanks so much for that invite and information! But, unforunately I work tonight... damn. I'll definitely look into Ernie Allum. Other than Ernie, who you suggested, the only "pure" bass guitar teacher I've found in time is Robert Kaye, who apparently teaches out of Music and Arts in Mandarin.

I'm not sure if I get New Years Eve off, but if I do, I'd be glad to check out your band at the Pierside. That's over near the beaches, right? Well, I think it's on Beach Blvd anyway.

Dennis Marks teaches at UNF. He played for Arturo Sandoval on his grammy-winning stuff. I've had my personal run-ins with the guy, but he's a good teacher overall.

I'm gonna give this a bump. I'm in the same boat.

Does Dennis Marks only teach upright bass?

Er, to let you know, I went with Ernie Allum, and he's been an excellent teacher so far. Lessons aren't too expensive either, 18 for half an hour, 36 an hour. I've taken 3 hour lessons so far. Great guy overall, you should consider lessons with him.

You know, I think I will give him a try. I just gotta see if I can somehow get from Mandarin to Music and Arts (not a big problem) back to either Mandarin to catch the activity bus, or to my house (which might be a problem).

I'll give him a call tomorrow.

Edit: But not really, I'll be calling Robert Kaye. And maybe UNF if they have any students who need money for food in exchange for lessons.

I'm giving this a bump because I'm still continuing my search. I've got one number of a guy who isn't associated with a store. The only problem is he doesn't answer me back, so I'm giving up on him. His loss, I suppose.

+ 1,000,000 on Ernie! Not only one of the best players I've ever heard in my life, but one of the nicest people you will EVER have the pleasure of meeting in your life!

Subscribing to this because I too would like to find a reputable bass teacher to learn from here in the Jacksonville area.

What? I'm employed at UNF and I didn't know this. Or does he only teach upright bass? I may stop by his office and find out. Small world, y'know?

And speaking of Ernie, I think I've met him a few times when I visited Nice Music out in Orange Park... had no idea he taught as well, just figured him to be a salesman. I didn't even get the impression he was into bass that much.

I'm started playing bass in February. I'm wondering if there's a a good teacher near East Arlington. UNF would be a perfect location if I can get a confirmation that someone teaches bass there. I'm also dual enrolling at FCCJ South Campus starting next week and I'm wondering if someone teaches bass there.

Bumping this one back up

I called/emailed Nice Music, and got an email from Louie LeClaire saying that they would be giving Bass guitar lessons. I haven't had the opportunity to call and see if Mr. Ealum is still there. But, any others? Or any confirmation or contact info on some of the previously listed individuals?

I haven't visited Nice Music in quite some time so I have no idea. And I never followed up with the UNF guy even though I still work there.

Update to my own post. Ernie Ealum is still at Nice Music. I called him the other day and set up my first lesson for next Wednesday.

Two lessons in

I've taken two lessons so far with Mr. Ealum. Super nice guy and very easy to talk to. The lessons have been very informative so far. He's good at meeting you at the level you're at instead of making you rework the basics or start further ahead than you are ready for.
