This gig is so totally over my head but..I'm reminded of a night in 1980. I'm playing with Slink Rand in Carbondale Il and Frank and the band show up post gig (mothers day too IINM)
A skinny guy in leather and long multicolored hair comes up and compliments me on my use of feedback on bass. Genuinely too. Later on I put 2+2 together...

I had a drummer roommate many years ago and he did 13/8 15/8 etc with no problem. He was from Turkey and these were just natural rhythms for him.

I know what that means, but I probably couldn't do it on the spot. A request like that probably elimates 99% of us, just guessing.

A teacher I had almost 20 years ago in a college jazz combo told me to spend just a few minutes a week playing scales over odd time sigs (5, 7, 10, 11 and 13) because it really streches your ability. After about 2 months of that I could do these odd times routinely. It's not often they're needed, but once in a while the ability to spit this out on a moments notice comes in handy.

Hmm.. 13/8.. thats easy i do that in some jams w/ the death cheaters.

1-2-3-4-5-6, 7-8-9-10-11-12, 1 (repeat) is how i count that and you can give it a ton of feel.. even with 3-4 notes

Check out Aaron Copland's EDIT:Appalachian Spring sometime. Changes time sig quite frequently. We played that piece in college and it took some of the folks a bit to get a feel for it.

BTW I believe Vai's "Litte Green Men" is in 13/8. Correct me if I'm wrong.

That sounds awesome! I wish I could have been there, I love odd-time stuff...

I'm wondering, how did Steve treat the people who couldn't handle it? Was he nice, did he give constructive suggestions, or did he just say "you can't cut it, get out!"?
