Bass Chords and Harmony

Hey Janek !!

Hope the hectic touring is going ok with you .

I wanted to ask you about your chordal work on the bass . Its incredible . What in particular did you study to get to this point . I know you've said before that for you transcription has been the best thing as far as learning new things but I'd like to know if ther was anything else in particular which made your chord playing on the bass so fluent .

Also I want to say that your songs are fantastic . You can see the traditional element of jazz involved there but they really are very modern sounding . Hope to hear more of our incredible music man .

P.S : I started transcribing after listening to you talk about it a year back and I've done some Miles Davis tunes and I do now realise how much every new tune I transcribe adds immensely to my vocabulary .

Thanks,
Vibhas

I think the fluency of chordal work comes with understanding melody is a huge part of that. Making sure that the top note of each voicing you play leads to the next chord melodically can really help your playing sound fluid. It is, at the end of the day though, a lot of hard work transcribing the masters of harmony and then translating that into something that makes sense for your own music.
