Talking Boaters gig

So I'm sitting down on the stools right next to the stage in Boaters by the Thames, jazz every Sunday listening to Jim Mullen with Laurence Cottle, Ian Thomas and Simon Carter. Amazing gig, Mullen's killing it. Then my mate next to me taps me on the shoulder and says 'look - who's this - new bass player sitting in'. I said 'Oh right' then looked - my heart almost stopped - JANEK GWIZDALA was setting up his five string! I told my friend who it was and he couldn't believe it! Janek showed everyone how it was done with some groovy playing and ridiculously fluent lines!

Janek, what was going on - I mean of all the people I didn't expect to see, a New York based player was high up the list! Are you doing any more gigs around?

Great playing by the way - was that some prestia style muting you were doing to get that latin groove - it was sounding great!

Thanks!

That must have been very cool. Did Laurence and Janek jam together at all?

Nah, they didn't jam together unfortunately, but it might have been a bit impractical - boaters hasn't exactly got the biggest stage!

Hey,

wasn't in town playing, was there for a funeral. Very sad time for me as my mentor and first teacher who has been my friend for some 18 years passed away suddenly last week. I went to London to spend time with his family and to play at his funeral.

It was good to see Laurence, Jim, Simon and Ian though. Those guys taught me so much about what I do today, and I rarely get to see or play with them. So it was, as it always is, a great honor to sit in on one of Laurence's gigs.

Easy,

Janek
