couple of transcription Qs

When you were studying at Berklee, how long on average would you transcribe for each day?

Also, I was wondering if you've ever transcribed complete arrangements straight onto paper - and if so - given the time-consuming nature of taking a 3-5 minute track and writing out all the parts individually (especially if you're having trouble hearing some of the harmony etc.) do you find it more useful to do it in bits (say an hour every day) or block off say a 6 hour period every once in a while to get through a whole tune?

Thanks a lot

as far as I remember.. (and this is going back almost 13 years now.... holy crap!) there was never any set routine to the transcription, or to practicing in general. I was just focussed on doing what I loved and whatever that ended up being I did it... for hours and hours every day. I would spend 8hrs working on one complete transcription sometimes, and then just a few minutes transcribing a couple of bars, but then hours working on that idea on the instrument. In the end it seemed to work out okay. I've never been one for regime in my music when it comes to learning stuff. Either I don't understand and love it and want to figure out what it is.... or I just move onto the next thing until I find myself being inspired...
