David Letterman show with Delta Goodrem

just did Letterman with Australian pop star Delta Goodrem and you can check it out at:

been using a P-bass on this gig with the new FBA rig which has been rocking!

She's the biggest selling female artist in Australia of all time, and is coming to the US with her album "Delta".

VERY cool performance! Nice and simple groove, is a perfect match to her playing and vocals.

She's not that difficult to look at, either.

I'm interested enough I'll be poking around iTunes for her studio stuff.

EDIT: WOW, I just went and looked at her bio. That's a pretty amazing (and uplifting) story over the last few years.

Saw your Fodera next to the rig! Did you also used that?

Is your P-bass a custom Shop?

I am using the Fodera on some songs with this artist. There are a couple of things that work better feel wise when it comes to some of the more R&B sounding songs.

The bass is an American Standard, I've played some of the Custom Shop basses and they're amazing so perhaps I'll end up playing one in the not too distant future, but for now the American Standard is totally rocking and I love it.

From the comments on youtube it seems that a number of her fans don't think she sounded that great. What are your thoughts about that?

Compared to the rest of the band movement wise they're on 5 and you're on 10.

well I think she was a little nervous, but I thought she did fantastic. She's one of the greatest singers I've ever worked with, and we played central park a few days later and she was on fire. Did a couple of acoustic things that left us all speechless. She is the complete package. Sings incredible, looks amazing, she's a great person to hang out with, not a diva at all, it's a joy to work with her.

as for the movement thing...... yeah, I can't really help that, I always end up bounding around the stage........

That's one big Fender flightcase! Is that for your basses?

Yeah, I can fit up to three basses in there. I really need at least one other bass on the road with me when I'm doing a gig like Delta Goodrem. Never leave home without a backup bass these days.....

this flight case is by far the best I've ever used. Light, strong, fits multiple basses (and my tennis raquet!!!!) has wheels, and comes in around 48lbs when I have two basses in there with a couple of other things.

One thing that you don't have too much control over though is TSA at the airports after you check the case. One my way from LA to NYC last week they took out my P-Bass and my Fodera and then took out all the dividers in the case that hold the basses in place and then didn't put them back in. Just left the basses sitting back to back on top of each other, and the bridge of the P-bass dug into the back of the Fodera all the way to NYC. Gouged a huge dent in the back of the bass. I have to go and get it worked on now. Bummer.

It just blows me away that your playing with Delta, Janek. Not that I wouldn't expect Delta to hire the best of the best session players... I just wouldn't have expected to see you guys with her... Would be a fun, relaxed gig I'm sure.

She has been pretty pitchy at the gigs and TV performances I have seen over the past 5 years in Australia.

yeah, it's a totally relaxed gig, very hard grooving band, and a really cook artist to work with on a personal level. She really killed it on the central park show, there are some cell phone videos floating around on youtube I think.

From the interviews and appearances I've seen of her through T.V. she seems really natural and down to Earth. She's damn good looking too.

I don't think that was her best performance as a few people mentioned on the youtube page, but the band sounded great.

Thats one hot looking p bass- that has to be the best color combination available.

Very nice! I have never heard of her- I will need to check that CD out. Sorry to hear about your bass mishap in flight. It is a shame that people can be disrespectful like that, no matter what the item may be. You obviously packed it the way you did for a reason. maybe a nice letter on the inside of the lid requesting it to be put back the way it was would help? Maybe I'm naive...I don't fly much. I am a behaviorist by day though. Anway, nice job and enjoy that tour.

it's a cool gig. bloddy freezing in that studio though. I highly recommend taking an arctic coat. It's one of the few times I've been grateful to be playing in a suit jacket. Normally really uncomfortable. But the combination of the fender bass and the freezing temperatures, it's was perfect!

doesn't matter what you do with the instruments when you ship them, the TSA will tear it all apart.

Jojo mayer's tour last year was a nightmare for that with the huge pedal board I was traveling with. I would get it all perfect, tidy, signal chain right and all that, and then we'd go to the airport and they'd rip it all apart. So I spent a lot of time re-building the board and trying to remember what I had plugged in where.....

But I do fly an insane amount so I'm used to it. 7 flights already this month, and around 80,000 just on united airlines, never mind anything else. And a tour in europe coming up in Nov. it's cool, I'm used to it. I know gear gets bent out of shape, but I try not to lose my mind over it as I would put myself in the ground a little too soon from all this touring.

Yeah, I understand that this kind of thing is not worth shortening your life over, but human decency would state that if you mess it up, clean it up. Doesn't sound too hard to put cushions between two instruments. I have a friend who shipped a 2x15 fender dual showman speaker cab and it was reduced to firewood and had obviously been intentional. If things break because of an accident then they do but when it is purposeful it doesn't make sense. Anyway, I guess I'll worry about it if I fly and I hope I handle it as well as you.

Another thought- maybe you should have a pad installed on the backs, like the old gretsch instruments...Now I will stop worrying about it and get back to work!
