Janek , Im 16 and ive been playing electric bass for about 3 years now. I play all different styles and I read very well . I play in all bands that are available in my school including concert band , jazz band , and also playing in the pit orchestra for plays. I really enjoy bass but I have heard from many pros that sessions are almost impossible to get into these days. Im looking towards a future in music . So what kind of gigs would be good for someone like me that reads well . I think doing film scores and stuff like that would be good but i just dont knwo anymore now that Ive heard all the work is hard to get into. If you have any advice on what to prepare myself better.

well, you're right. all work is hard to get into. The session scene is pretty much over right now for a new young bass player to break into it. If you're into doing film scores then you should live in London or Los Angeles as that's where a lot of them get cut. But again, it's a very closed scene.

I would really concentrate on being a bass player with a unique voice if that's something that might appeal to you. Reading is great, and I think it's an essential part of being a well rounded musician. But you're 16, and have the rest of your career in front of you. Go out and find something that inspires you, that you can really dig into. And build a unique voice for yourself. That's really the only way to get noticed and respected for your playing and your musicianship.
