Janek,

I discovered Jojo Mayer's Nerve a few months back, and being so blown away and excited about the music that was being created on the spot, I decided that I'd like to start this type of project as well. After months of planning, I held my groups first rehearsal yesterday. It was extremely fresh and went very well. We're all quite excited. Also, I'm quite conscious of not trying to emulate exactly what Jojo's done, but instead, emulate his approach, philosophy, and emphasis on textures.

I've watched many Nerve performances and been trying to listen to many of the types of music that contribute to this sound. My question is, what did you do to prepare yourself and better aquaint/educate yourself on this type of music? Are there any specific artists that you recommend? Mindset?

Your help is well appreciated,

Andrew

well I'm from London, so my musical surroundings were filled with dance music because that's one of the places where so much electronic music has come from.

House, D&B, trip hop, dub, break beat, break core... the list of styles is pretty much endless and always growing.

there are definitely artists I check out in a few of the main genres.... roni size, LTJ bukem, Adam Freeland, Phantom Force.... there are just so many....

My mindset is to Listen first - Play Second. see what's going on around me, understand where the audience is at, how much they want to dance, how much they want to listen, the curve of the energy of the set, where we need a rest with a breakdown, where Tak and Jojo are at with their energy... there are a ton of factors that go into it, but it's really something that has developed to where I don't have to be conscious of it at all. It just flows right now.

Sometimes I get it right, sometimes it's a disaster. It's being able to let go and let the unknown come to you that will produce the most interesting results.

Easy,

Janek
