DVD's......

I'm happy to bring news of an upcoming instructional DVD I'll be shooting in the end of Nov and putting out in the new year.

I have a basic concept for the DVD and a number of things I will discuss and perform, but am also up for hearing from people out there that want to suggest some topics they would like to see.

So often these DVD's are made with little consideration for those people who might actually be looking at them and trying to learn something.

So please, drop some ideas in this thread and let me know what you think isn't talked about enough, and what you might want to see from this.

I'm also going to be using a trio setting to perform some songs on the dvd as well as it being just instructional.

There will be a DVD coming out in the summer next year of a special concert I'm putting together in NYC for Feb of 07...... more details to come.

You could do something incorporating This Thread in your video...and, on that topic, I think pretty much anything in your "Ask A Pro" forum...

Focus on the right hand technique, playing 'jazz' arpeggio's in a musical sequence/context with string skipping up to speed and sounding musical?

maybe it would be useful to make a short of which concepts you already have in mind, so we could make additions or specify the way we'd like to see them presented...

John MacLaughlin's DVD ('This is the way I do it' http://www.allaboutjazz.com/php/article.php?id=14743) is an interesting reference point. It must have taken him ages to put together but it is incredibly methodical. It 's heavy on theory but it has fantastic clarity.

The solo analysis sections are very informative, and for any new bass instruction video to break the mould, it might be good to take a leaf from his book.

However, his DVD doesn't specifically deal with technique, maybe yours could be his plus more?

I'd like to see a DVD out that actually speaks about the importance of playing something in context - I know you cant really teach people how to listen to the musicians around them, but you can never stress how important it is.

An explanation on how to build a solid "Library" of music. Not asking you to give away your ideas. Just explain some of the excersizes you do to keep it all fresh in your head and ready to be improvised.

a massive +1 to what Bobb said

maybe an analysis of some famous solos, havona springs to mind

something that i have not seen in any instructional dvds before is set up, not so much how to do it but more towards how certain set ups affect your tone and how you play.

but talking about your technique and how it works in the real world should be a must

-Like what scales would you use while kayaking down the Thames?
-Do you use a 4 or5 string bass while eskimo roling?

Play a bass with obvious fret markers. On Rudy Sarzo's vid, he forgoes his giant fret marker having, Peavey signature model, for a one marker having Sirus. Ugh, kinda hard to follow.

What up man? You should include a clip of you guys at the 55 with Stern, so everyone can see the energy and attitude you bring to the gig, because THAT is soorly lacking in alot of players.
Attitude and energy are definitely topics not discussed enough in instructional DVD's.

Hi Janek,

I'm sorry I won't be at the bass day - but I'm sure it'll be a blast - the one are I'd love to see covered in a DVD is more about extended and outside harmony - I know it's a huge area and something of a personal choice in terms of what devices / approaches you choose - but I'd be really interested in what ideas you use to step around a tune's harmony - even a basic standard - and how you find ways to build relationships between 'unrelated' keys etc - then I'd obviously want to see you bust through some mad **** as well

- I hope it comes out well - keep us posted.
