I recently got a gig playing with Indonesian jazz fusion guitarist Balawan and two members of his Batuan Ethnic Fusion. He plays guitar Stanley Jordan style a lot, but also has his own Gamelan fusion kind of thing going on. Very unique. It is a one off gig. He's coming to visit the local college campus and probably do some clinics and such.
I was told I would be sent a repertoire list of jazz standards and original tunes with mp3s and some notation..
I'm guessing I should just prepare like crazy! Any advice? I mean I won't make any long lasting connections but I assume it will be a good experience over all. |

If this guy is banana's over you're playing and you're a great hang you'd better believe you're on his list of call backs and this inverse if you're unprepared and/or a bad hang. |

I've checked that guy out before and he's great. I think you should be as prepared as possible, relaxed, open minded and open to anything being possible on the gig. It's a great connection, and it could lead to many things in the future if you're open minded going into the situation.
Good luck,
Janek |

even if he doesn't ever call you, he could well pass your number on to other artists in need. That's the way this business works.
Practice your butt off, be more prepared than he is, and have a great time!

Have fun! Better things may come of it.

guitar player for one night. One year later he contacted me and that led to a gig
that went 4 years with a hip band.
You never know. Every gig I have gotten in the last 25 years was word of mouth
thru working musicians. |

They were talking about how he attacked every $50 gig he did, and he did as many as he could. The guy has, relatively speaking, owned NYC for years. Think it had something to do with him playing with that kind of attitude, no matter how important he thought the gig might have been? I think so. You need to go kill this gig. | | Thread Tools | Search this Thread | | | |
