Getting into transcribing?

Sign in to disble this ad
Hey Janek,

Im a 16 year old bass player who loves music and especially the good stuff like jazz, funk and latin. I have been playing bass for a few years now and want to get into transcribing. Well at the moment I am working on more complicated tunes I find that one thing I need to improve is my transcribing. I have lifted random little parts of songs before but ive never really sat down and worked away at a tune before.

I was wondering if you have any good tunes to transcribe what the bass player is doing? soloist etc? this is sort of a broad question but I was hoping you could set me up with some sort of starting point?

thanks so much

A great place to start would be the album that your user name is.

The solos, bass lines, chord progressions of that album are great for you to learn.

Otherwise, I'd pick some blues based tunes and rock/pop tunes.

all the best.

Read back through the old threads: this has been dealt with many, many times.

You can read Janek's opinions on how to get started without wasting any of his time.

Cheers,
Dan

okay okay, calm down people. No need to speak on my behalf. If this forum was a waste of my time then I would participate.

The subject of transcribing has been dealt with in several other threads, but there's no reason why it can't be resumed right here.

I would suggest starting with something that is both simple and that you really dig. There's nothing worse than transcribing something just for the sake of doing it, so find something that really jumps out at you and start with that. The simpler you start the better foundation you'll give yourself, and the stronger your ear will become. You'll start to notice so many similarities between solos and phrases when you're transcribing different things, and as your vocabulary grows you'll find things easier to transcribe.

Some artists that I've transcribed include: Lee Morgan, Herbie Hancock, Pat Metheny, John Coltrane, Miles Davis, Clifford Brown, Art Pepper, Cannonball Adderley, Brad Mehldau, Chick Corea, Jim Hall, Pat Martino, Steve Grossman, Louis Armstrong, Charlie Parker, Stan Getz, Michael Brecker, Randy Brecker, and many many more.....

Find things that inspire you, and pace yourself with the level of difficulty that you choose to start out with.

Good luck with it all.

Easy,

Janek
