Gigs in the city, and venues with "no amp"

Hey Janek,

I recently had the situation of the venue telling me that they have no bass amp in which i told them that i'd just go direct into the PA. They didn't give info to if they are equipped with a PA. I ended up bringing my amp out and my DI and sure enough i went DI to PA. Long story short, Super Redhead from Bedford Ave up to Harlem at 2am. Not fun.

How did you deal with scenarios like this?

Thanks alot.

I try and do as much research on a place online before I go if it's somewhere I haven't played before. And I always call and try to talk to someone that sounds like they know what they're doing before I head out to the gig.

But to be honest, right now I ask the bandleader to take care of either the backline at the club or a cab to get me there and back with my own gear.

Easy,

Janek

Light weight gear is your friend in situations like this, especially if you don't have a car. For most of the gigs I do I use an AI Focus and a UL112 and that's places where I have already checked out the scene, but I also will bring this even if they have a rig. If the gig is going to be quiet then I'll bring the Focus head and a GK 112MBX cabinet, this is a combination that one could easily ride the train or bus with.

My advice: Go lighter if you can afford to.

yeah, light gear is something I sadly don't own.

might be a little easier to make it to some smaller gigs here and there, but I'm really trying to focus on this new band I have. And that really needs some bigger amps to get the right sound.....

guess I'm back to the cabs again...

Easy,

Janek
