with it being the age of youtube and all, you really don't have to go too far to hear some of the most incredible performances of all time.
I'm going to try and post a bunch of things that I come across that really inspire me as a musicians and an improvisor, and I encourage you to do the same and share ideas.
Some of the most inspirational things come from the simplest.
Check out Wynton Marsalis and Victor Goines playing happy birthday. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_Amwq43-lrM

Total blast to see Lyle Mays rocking out on the guitar as well.
I really dig that a lot of Metheny's improvising is with vocab that doesn't seem overly harmonically dense or complex. The conviction with which he delivers carries the simplest of melodies. Such strong emotive lines. Man... I really could go on and on... |

James Gadson is just about as funky as you can get on drums... and dig the bassist chillin in the chair with his leg up and the tele bass.

John | DOH!!! yeah, I guess I'll have all that good stuff to look forward to one day when I become a citizen. Avoided it for almost 11 years now, I guess it's just a matter of time.
Maybe I'll try and get into Jury Duty in Malibu or something.... might be a little easier on the system to hang out there for a few days.
I'll be back in NYC in the end of the month. Clinic in Philly, then 4th of July stuff with the missus up in Rhode Island. Gotta try and find some time to rehearse with herr jo-fro mayer too. I totally forgot he's capable of the Gadson Fro.... might have to work that one into a new band shot for our next tour.....

you have to watch this like a little drama; Monica is at a rehearsal with the trio, they run Waltz for Debby, she doesn't really know where to come in. They repeat it and its a beautiful musical event. Eddie is unbelievable of course, Monica sings in Swedish, her pitch and sound is so moving (and she's so lovely). And Bill....well, what can one say?
This makes me proud to be a musician! |

Not even an arrangement of the song, just a performance of the melody and straight into blowing.
It's something to think about, that when given the opportunity to express yourself, you actually take a minute to think about what the end result might possibly say. Playing Blue Bossa the way it's being performed here has pretty limited scope for saying something new. And I visited the companies website wondering if there was a specific reason for choosing this song, and their explanation and concept was presented as this:
"Each 1-hour episode features a diverse group of talented jazz and blues musicians, gathered together in a recording studio for the sole purpose of creating fresh, new music. Many are working with one another for the very first time."
I didn't hear too many fresh or new concepts in a performance of Blue Bossa, so I'm puzzled at the motivation for doing this. All great musicians involved, no doubt. Which makes it even stranger that you wouldn't produce music to the best of the performers ability, and therefor actually create something new and fresh to present to the public.
And I think Nate Phillips is a great bass player by the way.....
