Interplay of the drummer and bass player

Janek,

When you play with a drummer, what is the ideal interplay you look for? Are there any best practices or exercises that we can use to sound tight together?

Thanks,
Bruce

it's the same no matter what instrument a person is playing when I play with them. I'm looking for great time, sound, and an open ear that can react to anything that's going on on the bandstand or the studio. I would say the best thing for developing good interaction between musicians is to be responsible for your own time and not rely on the drummer for it, listen to everything that's going on around and listen first, play second.

Easy,

Janek

find out what music he enjoys, tell him what music you enjoy. Try to play as many styles as possible with the drummer and see how he responds to different textures, volume changes, legato vs staccato, accents, etc.

Most of all, the more time and music you play together, the tighter you will be so get out there and jam!
