Janek - Gear?

Sign in to disble this ad
Hi all.

I'we asked Janek about what gear he is using when playing with nerve. And he said that i should ask it here so you all could see it and discuss.

So, what kind of gear are you using janek?
Tell us the way the signal is going. From bass to amp.

okay..... here goes....

first of all there were two DI's on the rig. One pre and one post fx. the signal would go Boss OC2 - Moogerfooger lowpass filter - Bass Balls - Line6 Filter modeler - Boss Chorus - Small Stone Flanger - Ibenez Synth Bass - Boss Distortion - Line6 Delay Modeler. Expression pedals for the moog and the filter modeler, and a volume pedal on the whole thing.

It's a crap load of gear. Could probably do it just the OC2 and the moodgerfooger. Maybe one distortion like the bass balls. I'm going to be doing some rehearsals with Jojo Mayer and Nerve in NYC this month, so I'm going to try and scale it all down to make it easier to travel with, and less of a headache when things go wrong.

Easy,

Janek

I'we now tested the Moogerfooger LowPass Filter (VST).
That must be one of the most important effect you use with nerve.
Sounds great on my computer.

yeah, the moog is great because you can filter other pedals with it. If you get the sensitivity right, and set the thing up a bit, you can trigger the whole pedal board with it.

earthshaking bass

hi janek

i'm trying to emulate the ultra dubby DnB bass with my octaver and fuzz. other than the issue of tracking the lower notes, there isn't enough of that bass whoomph sound that i would like to have. i can achieve abt 70% of that sound after maxxing out the bass eq on the amp.

care to share on how u achieve that sound? i saw u kinda did that in a nerve gig....

for the real low end you need a Boss OC-2 octave pedal. Don't play low notes, play up around the 9th 10th and 11th fret on the E and A string, it tracks better there. set the two dials on the pedal completely opposite to each other. The one of the left all the way to the left, and the one on the right all the way to the right. and the drive in the middle cranked up.

That will give you the low end you're looking for.

Raj,

I'm into the ring modulator thing for sure. I just don't have one. I programmed something in the line6 delay once that sounded like one, but then I dropped it on a marble floor at a a sushi joint in Venezueala and it hasn't worked since. Wayne Krantz uses a lot of that stuff as far as I remember (it's been a while since I played with him so I could be totally wrong!!!) but I think he gets those crazy sounds from some ring mod type stuff.

It's all what you make of it really. I normally play with no effects at all. Just clean, and make all the sounds I need for my own music with the bass and my fingers. if you really hear something, go and check it out. You might find it's the thing that changes your life, or you might find it's just another $300 on a piece of gear that makes you soundmore like everyone else.

Easy,

Janek

I love the sound that WK gets with his Ring Mod pedal, which I heard that was what he used onGreenwich Mean and that live dbl-CD. The only thing is that it is tough to justify $300-400 on a Moog pedal if it isn't going to see a ton of action on gigs, for me. An MXR Octave and a TU-2 seem to give me the desired effects that I use on gigs these days (one of which is being in-tune ).

If that Line6 pedal has a 'pass-able' ring mod-like effect I might try that. It sound like there is a bit more bells and whisles in one of those, for about the same amount of chee$e. Which one did you say you had? What other options does it have?

The line6 doesn't have a preset that is a ring mod, I just tweaked one of the settings until it sounded like one. I can't even remember which one it was. It was a couple of years ago now.

It's the Line6 Delay modeler. Has a bunch of stuff in it, it's a great pedal for the price.

Easy,

Janek

ring mod

i'm actually on my way to get a moogerfooger ring mod. i've tried it on bass and its really a musical instrument in itself! if you attach the exp pedal on the frequency knob, you can get dj scratching sounds by going back n forth really fast.

outta this world!

Today i'we tested the Oc-3 - M LPF - Bassballs.
YEAH!
it sounds great.

At first the LowPass filter was like: "what the ** is this!?".
it didnt hapend anything or it just sound broken.
But after a while i did get one nice sound.

The bassballs is just making the final tuch. nice.

And the OC-3. Amazing how it changes the sound from none octave to -12 octave. The lowpass filter creates a cooler sound when using the oc-3. better bass tone.

I know you are using oc-2. Any differens? naaw?

Thanks for sharing your gear janek ^^

Janek, is this what you did on "And Another Thing"? I was listening to the album again tonight (it's become my official album to play when cutting up chicken), and there's some notes that sound well below E on that tune that I thought must have come from an octaver but wasn't sure.

I think I used the EBS octave pedal on that track, I can't really remember to be honest, it was three years ago now.

And then after Elliot plays his solo he puts down his horn, and comps for me on keys playing a bass line with his lft hand and chords with his right.

I use the OC-2 on Jojo's gig. It has more of a sine wave/electronica sound than the OC-3 I think.

Easy,

Janek
