Klaus Voorman

I have looked on all over on google for this and have not found it. But if you look at old and recent pictures of Klaus Voorman with his old Fender P Bass, there is some sort of piece of fuzz under the strings near the pickup. I am not sure what it is exactly or what it is used for. Thanks.

Perhaps to make the strings sound dead for a more vintage sound?

Used as a mute... Typical of that time period and the sound that was sought after. I've seen Carol Kaye, et al. doing the same thing in photos from that period.
