Learning Melodies

Sign in to disble this ad
Hey Janek,
I've listened to all 12 of your basscasts. They were great! I was wondering if you could give me some resources about books or songs that have simple melodies? As a bass player trying to play more melodically i don't know where to start.

Thanks!

I have found that the fake book has been a great resource for learning melodies. The other convientient thing about that resource is that so many people have created renditions of the tunes, so variety in interpretation is easily acquired via YouTube, iTunes. The songs are all over.

Jaco P always said to play melodies to any song or piece you're playing the bass to. Don't worry too much if you can't find the music - you'll improve your ear working it out by yourself.

just turn on the radio and start listening..... walk in the street and keep your ears open... there are melodies everywhere.

I would stay well away from books and written music. The more you pick up melodies by ear, the stronger they will resonate with you, and longer they will stick with you. Look for melodies that excite you, melodies that grab your interest. The more into the melody you're learning, the more it's going to be relevant to your music and your playing.

Easy,

Janek
