| you really have to rest it.
I would suggest icing - bowl of cold water full of ice cubes. Kind of like a gin and tonic for your hand without the gin and tonic....
I've only ever had one injury as a bass player and that was to my wrist. I still to this day have no idea how or why it happened. I was playing a clinic in NYC with Gary Husband the day before leaving on tour with my own band to south america with Gary, Randy Brecker, Tim Miller, and Elliot Mason. It couldn't have come at a worse time as I had signed contracts and was under a lot of pressure to sell out the venues down there and deliver in a big way for the promoter. I had 12 hours to come up with something before I got on the plane and came up with nothing. I got to Venezuela, hung out with the promoter the first night... and by some miracle, his mothers business was to make theraputic wrist wraps that you could either microwave to heat up, or put in the freezer to keep cold. So as soon as I got there I wore one of these things non stop, heating and cooling the injury, playing on tv, on the radio doing all the promo for the shows... and then on the day of the first sold out show in Caracas I was feeling up to playing. We played out the rest of the tour with some discomfort in my wrist, i got on the plane back home to NYC and played my first full show with Mike Stern that night, and I've never had a problem since.
A lot of it is in your mind, at least i think that's been the case for me. I've had twitches here and there since, but nothing major, and I've just rested and not played and tried to relax doing something totally unrelated to relieve the stress of the musical situation I'm in at the time. This seems to divert the mind away form the pain and get me back in the mindset of want to make music again.
I've been on vacation for almost two weeks right now for the first time in years. And this is the first time I haven't played the bass for two weeks in 14 years. So I'm scared out of my mind about what it's going to be like getting back into the swing of things when I hit home again. I have three days before I have to work when I get back so I hope that's enough. But I think it's really going to be a question of mind over matter.
The rest for two weeks will have done me good, and I think for you to rest your injury right now, and just play when you have to is the only thing you can do. Have faith in your consistency as a player, and know that you don't have to shed all the time in order to complete the set of musical tasks you have ahead of you.
Easy,
