Hi Janek

I heard you with Mike Stern a 55 bar last wednesday. Great music and your guys are some of the best out there. No doubt about that.

I really liked the way you support Mike under his solo's.
Could you maybe give a example of some walking bass you did when playing a Minor Blues. Maybe the key of C (minor blues)

I was very impressed of the different ways your support him.

I know this may take some time but it would be great. Thanks

-Christian

well I don't think that the way I was supporting mike was that fundamentaly different from the way Jimmy Garrison, Paul Chambers, Leroy Vinegar, or Walter Booker would be playing behind Trane, Miles, Joe Henderson, Lee Morgan or Cannonball. It's all from the same language, and it's important to study these bass players if you want to expand your vocabulary of walking bass lines, and ability to support a soloist in that style.

That's where I'm coming from when you listen to what I play behind Mike. The context is slightly different as it's 2007 now, and we're playing with a very modern drummer, but the triplet feel is still the same concept.

Get any recordings with the following bass players on and transcribe their lines:

Paul Chambers
Jimmy Garrison
Walter Booker
Leroy Vinager
Oscar Pettiford
Slam Stewart
Ray Brown
Sam Jones
Ron Carter
Butch Warren
Bob Cranshaw

And check out some modern players like:

Dave Holland
Reginald Veal
Rodney Witaker
Christopher Thomas
Derrick Hodge
Ruben Rogers
Carlos Henriquez

There are of course many bass players that I might have missed, but this is just a short list off the top of my head of cats who I really dig, and whos music I have studied greatly.

Easy,

Janek
