Modern Harmonic lanuage

Sign in to disble this ad
Hi Janek

In your podcast demonstrating adding the color of A major on top of a standard progression in F.
I was curious if you could share some artists who uses this more modern lanuage.
I must say the use of a different tonality over is new to me and very cool.

and may I dovetail?

Onto Hakon's question? If I am reading him correctly), the chord Amaj/Fbass or an Fmaj7 #5 is a more modern sonority I guess you could say (Skryabin and Prokofieff were using it 100 years ago), but it still sounds very fresh to my ear. My question is how does this chord function? I think its a subjective question because I think you hear Keith Jarrett using it almost as a substitute tonic or a decoration of tonic- but others using it in different ways.
Your thoughts?
Many thanks!
Jon

I would really think about how the chord functions... the more time you spend thinking about it, the less time you spend listening to it and reacting to it.

I think I was talking about triadic ideas when soloing to create tension. Meaning the use of triads both inside and outside the harmonic context you're playing in. Improvisors from Coltrane to Rosenwinkel have been using this kind of material for years. John Scofield, Pat Metheny, Steve Grossman, Ornette COleman.... just to name a few.

And when you talk about a Tonic chord with a raised 5th, that can just be a simple substitution for the basic tonic chord to create tension..... there are just so many ways to look at it that I tend to lean towards what functions melodically the best.

Easy,

Janek
