| Newbie buying a bass guitar

Hi everyone,
I'm wanted to buy a bass guitar, although I'm not actively playing with a band. I used to sing and hold rhythm guitars in a rock band back in high school and college. Doing the bass was something i wanted to pursue back in grades school but my dad insisted i choose vocals.
I'm a 27yr old woman, based in the Philippines. I'll be on a business trip on Nov 24-Dec 8 in the US and i wanted to purchase my bass guitar there.
Please advise as to which kind should i buy.
Will appreciate all your suggestions!
