I notice many musicians play "licks"

what are your thoughts about playing licks versus pure improvisation

Everyone does this though right?

Thanks

I play the same material a lot (rock) so I find myself getting trapped into the same old licks. It's a constant struggle to try and keep my playing fresh. We're always limited by our own musical vocabulary and the structure of the material we perform.
